Blp3,
Make sure the snacks and the food do not contain corn, wheat, or soy. These three grains will kill your cat or dog. For my dog I cube roast, slow cook in a pan, then freeze. She loves to eat them frozen or thawed. Much cheaper snack than buying the junk from the store and it is good for her.
The best dog food seems to be a product called HiLife but it is not available (yet) in the States. My next suggestion would be Orijen.
Susan
So Is soy milk and soy peanut butter that we eat bad for our dog? I was thinking peanuts are bad, but I use it to give her medicine.
And I thought I just heard our beef was a cancer killer for dogs.
And I never heard of Orijen dog food. Where do I buy it?
Barbara
Barbara,
No corn, wheat, or soy of any kind. These three grains are very toxic to cats and dogs - just like feeding antifreeze.
If you purchase your beef from Wal-Mart where they inject the meat with additives to preserve the meat - then the answer is "yes". The junk injected into the meat is the cancer causing agent. Check with the butcher at your local grocery to find out if their meat is treated or not to know if those meats are safe.
Orijen dog food is available at a number of online locations. I don't believe PetSmart carries Orjen. Google "Orijen" to compare pet food suppliers.
Susan
OK, I have to stop the soy milk and the soy peanut butter. An since I shop at Wal-Mart - no beef from there.
We are using Nature's Recipe food now until I find out if that is bad or I can get good stuff.
I buy her Beef Square Tenders from Merrick for her snacks. Have you any info on them?
God, I saw that dog video and my dog has the hair loss, sores, and infections. I have had her to the vet many times - different ones, and no info on the grains. I am killing my dog. There should be a law.
Thanks so much.
Barbara
Barbara,
I am working very hard at getting something done for these poor dogs. I live in a small town with only about 2,500 people and I see 7 to 10 dogs with these conditions every day in my salon.
These pet food companies must be stopped and so should the vets. The vets get a huge kick back from the pet food they sell plus the meds they prescribe. Did you know most of the vet. education is funded by the pet food companies?
I'll get to work on your reviews. I am way behind in the review requests I have received so please be patient with me!
Susan
You have your hands full so don't worry about me. I have a much better understanding now about what not to do. I just have to figure out what I can give her now.
Thank you very much.
Barbara
Barbara,
I have a couple of questions for you as I work on these reviews. You have asked about the Merrick Beef Square Tenders which I am having a hard time locating. What I have found is Beef Filet Squares is this the same thing?
The second question I have is about the Nature's Recipe. What formula were you interested in? For cats or dogs?
Susan
I have a dog so the dog food is what I am concerned about.
Yes, I meant Merrick Beef Filet Squares.
A nd while I have on a pot of chicken and veggies boilling, we bought a bag of Maxxium dry dog food. Is that one ok?
I am trying to learn as fast as I can so I stop bothering you.
Thanks, Barbara
Barbara,
I live in an area where the items are limited as to what is available for pets. The only thing that is "fair" around here is the Maxximum. I used to really enjoy feeding my dog this stuff but I think the label doesn't always reflect what is actually in the bag.
I don't think it is great my any means but will do in a pinch.
You know you are not a bother to me. If I wasn't helping you and your Elsie I would feel bad about not having anyone to improve their well being!
I have nearly 2 million readers but very few are actually interested in doing something about the health of their pet. Many people request reviews but very few are interested beyond "just curious" so to hear from someone who is trying to make a difference is very refreshing and makes my drive to made changes worth while.
Susan
Merrick Beef Square Tenders is correct, sorry. I read the ingredients and it sounds ok.
Mrs Peters needs her brain checked. and to be sued
I would just like to correct the myth that veterinarian's education is funded by pet food companies, it is not. I work with a variety of young vets struggling with their student loan payments.
Pet food as well as drug companies do occasionally give veterinary professionals discounts or sample products, but I as well as my co-workers would not use a product we don't believe in.
There are bad vets, there are vets who only care about money, this is not the majority.
Not to mention salary wise we make very little compared to our human counterparts.
Pet foods need more regulation, it is difficult to tell if it is healthy by looking at the label alone. The guarenteed analysis often lacks vital nutrient information. Ingredient lists are decieving and the only claim labels regulated are organic and natural.
Human grade, 'organic tilf certified' etc can be put on a bag of beneful legally
corn and soy will not kill your dog (dogs with food allergies to the ingredients will have issues), please enlighten me how you came across that conclusion
and fyi-wheat gluten (not ideal for allergy dogs) is the same thing as seiten, a very healthy source of vegetable protein, please google it

We have fed our dog this for years thinking it was good. She has skin problems and no one told us about the lawsuits or said it was bad.
What is the best dog food for a big dog, 8 years old? And what about snacks? Thank you for your help.
