Ask Susan Peters Pet Food Review:
Why do they charge so much for this stuff when it is full of junk? Ol' Roy is much cheaper and scored higher in the review.
Let's take a look at this mess your vet suggests you feed your poor old dog.
We start with the first three ingredients which is said to make up 75% of the contents of the package. Here we have listed corn meal, chicken by-product meal, and animal fat.
Corn meal -
Corn meal is a cheap filler used by pet food companies to reduce production costs. Meal is a super concentrated mix so the corn is this batch is actually at least 5 times the amount listed.
We should probably take time out from this review to remind ourselves of the good and bad effects of corn in a cat or dog's diet. *Corn, wheat and soy are resonsible for fever, ear aches, ear infections, bad bread, dental disease, hair loss, dry and itchy skin, bloat, tumors, warts, moles, abnormal nail growth, arthritis, deafness, blindness, digestive problems, siezures, inflamed liver, inflamed kidneys, bladder problems, heart problems, and death. Oh yeah, for the good effects of corn - reduces the cost of pet food production.
By-products are floor sweepings collected from a rendering plant. Anything that hits the floor and is not fit for human consumption is by-product. By-products can't have "added" feathers but the ones included in the mess are just fine. Meal means the floor sweepings have had the water removed and the feathers, poultry poo, whatever has hit the floor is now concentrated.
Animal fat - restuarant grease and other fats used to flavor the product to entice your pet to eat something he/she would not normally eat.
On to the rest of the ingredients in Science Diet. Brewer's rice - Brewer's rice and brewer's dried yeast are by-products of beer production. There you go, your little pet gets what is left over after a beer run, the stuff not fit for human consumption.
Soybean mill run - left over junk after the usuable parts of the soybean have been removed. You should look back to the part of the review where I told you about the effects of feeding your pet corn, wheat, and soy.
Chicken liver flavor - I always like the way pet food companies hide the use of manure in the ingredients. Flavor is made from the manure of the animal the pet food company wants the pet food to taste like. What animal eats just chicken livers?
Just so you know that Ol' Roy, the cheap stuff at Wal-Mart scored a 6/10. If you are feeding this Science Diet mix to your pet change pet foods today! Heck, feed Ol'Roy you'd save lots of money. If your vet suggested you feed this crap to your pet change vets today!

My dog died in Feburary. The vet put her on the hills science dog food in late December. (can and dry)because she had crystels in her urine. when I took her back to the vets in January, her red blood count was up.. Overall, she was still active until one day in febuary, she hemoraged really bad on my rug, I took her back to the vet, and they kept asking me if she had anything toxic.. at that time, I couldn't think of anything.. They kept her overnight to give her intervenus of vitiam K and some other type of medicines. that night, she collapesed, then needed a blood transfusion, but, nothing helped. at that point, her red blood cell count was very low and she was having internal bleeding.. that night, I had to put her down, there was no hope for her.. She was only 5 years old and a very healthy dog.I don't think it was other foods, because my other four dogs are ok. I use to feed them purina and mix it with cooked meat.. now I feed my dogs all homemade food.. I don't trust any dog food at this point.
The vet couldn't give me a reason why she died, I even at an autopsy done on her and they claim they still couldn't find the cause. They just guessed it could have been DIC.
The strange think about hills, is the cat food was recalled, but not the dog food YET?I loved my dog and miss her so very much.. The vet bill was $1200.00 to bring home my baby in a box... very very upsetting.
I'm so sorry!
I am still not able to find out if Hills Senior Science Diet dry dog food was recalled.
Does anyone know? The websites for this information is never very helpful.
Thanks.
Lois,
This particular product has not been recalled by Hill's. Hill's does have a fair history of recalls. Pet foods produced by companies with recalls have often reported "cross contamination". This means the company doesn't clean the vat between runs. AAFCO is working on this issue but there have been no changes in the pet food industry.
The pet food recall was NOT a forced recall so none of these companies had to pull any of their products. Most companies recalled only the products which caused the most damage to pets. IE: Cause the largest number of pet deaths.
Always make sure your pet food does NOT include any CORN, WHEAT, or SOY. These are just cheap fillers used by the pet food producers to cut costs and are very toxic to cats and dogs.

My dog has been on Science Diet his whole life. He's a lab/heeler mix and just turned 14 years old. He is remarkably healthy. Sure, a little arthritis, and he can't jump as high as he used to, but HE'S 14!!! and doing just fine. Hill's Science Diet is not one of the products involved in the recall, contrary to the indication on this site.
i have 2 dogs one 4 yrs old one 2 yrs old. i was feeding them the recommended dose of hills science diet adult formula for almost a yr. during this year my 4 yr old wouldnt eat the food so i had to feed him a different brand my 2 year old ate the hills diet daily and many health problems excelled like seizures and many as time went on digestive problems constant vomitting and loose frequent stools. i took him to vets which promotes the hills diet food and told me he had sensitive stomach along with not to worry about the siezures as many dogs get this and it isnt a reason to worry. i decided to take him off the hills diet and started him on benefull by purina and his siezures went away completely, normal less stool, and he keeps his food and water down now. hmmm it makes me wonder if hills is all that they claim to be because i dont have no problems with the 25 dollar purina dog food vs the 80 dollar science diet. buyers beware hills is not what they claim to be it would have killed my dog i believe if i didnt discontinue the use of their food.

The Hill's dog food has not been recalled and they claim that it does not contain the recalled ingrediant. We had been feeding our Shi-poo the product for a while now and she suddenly died in February. She suddenly stopped eating and collapsed outside. There was blood in her urine and stools. The vet said that her liver and/or kidneys had shut down. We have held onto the Hill's dogfood product and we will need to get it tested and possibly consult a lawyer. Has anyone else had similar problems with the Hill's Dog Food brand? I'll check what the exact type it was. (I believe there are two).
