In current times hip hop jewelry is very popular. It has come to have a lot of meaning for the people of the hip hop culture. The bigger and bolder the jewelry, the bigger the statement that is made. Wearing hip hop jewelry means that you have arrived, and it especially means this to many people who have come from a very hard life. Typically the pendants that are picked out have very symbolic meanings to the individuals who buy them. 

Hip hop jewelry can come in many different styles. It is made in gold, silver, platinum and white gold. Usually there are diamonds that are set into this jewelry. There is also a huge variety of fake hip hop jewelry that can be expensive, but is cheap in comparison to the real deal. This jewelry can be made of base metals and sterling silver to save on costs. Typically real settings are not used to make this type of jewelry because a lot of the cost that is associated with real hip hop jewelry is due to the actual setting of the stones. The fake jewelry is usually created with cubic zirconia.

The craziest thing about the whole fad to me is the gold grillz that people wear. Some people don't even have anything wrong with their teeth. They just have these gold teeth that slip over their teeth that have diamonds set into them. I actually think they look kind of scary, but may be this is part of the allure.  It almost seems as if this is a form of investing. These people can just put their money into the teeth and not have to worry about a savings account. Of course they could always loose the gold teeth, or have it stolen. I can understand the jewelry, but the crazy gold grillz are a little beyond me.

I do understand the idea of showing where you have come from and that you have arrived by wearing jewelry. It is not much different from the very long standing tradition of wearing a class ring when you have completed college. Of course almost anyone can go buy jewelry, especially the fake jewelry. Unfortunately a lot of people who have not really made it do go and buy this stuff and simply live in debt. Which is also a major issue, because it seems that by having it they are, in their own way, keeping up with the Jones'. It is actually interesting how foreign the hip hop world may seem to some people, but there are more similarities in between worlds than may be realized.
