Hip Hop vs. Rap
58"Phantom" Hip Hop vs. Rap by Lynne Conte
Covan Magee is a Hip Hop & Rap artist whose desire is to be a world idol. He was born in NYC, studied electronic engineering technology and wanted a new life in his music career. He said that his brother Ira influenced him to become a great songwriter and Rap artist.
Ms. Conte: What is Hip Hop?
Artist: “Hip Hop is the revolution that began in NYC and usually has a story with some type of meaning that is usually positive. It's political! It's moral."
He says that Hip Hop teaches some type of positive lesson and will rarely be negative or violent, saying, “DJ Kool Herc, Jam Master J and Run DMC are the start of the Hip Hop revolution and many people have their own definition on Hip Hop & Rap.”
According to Magee, Hip Hop & Rap can be placed under the same bracket, but they are not the same genres. He says that Hip Hop & Rap sound different in tune.
Ms. Conte: What is Rap?
Magee: "Rap is bass and gets crunk,” meaning hardcore, negative and violent."
He also said that Hip Hop & Rap also sounds different in tune where Hip Hop is melodic, cultural and less aggressive than Rap.
Ms. Conte: What is the difference from Hip Hop vs. Rap?
"Hip Hop is music, art, poetry, basically life! Rap is just music itself, no culture behind it."
His first projects as a solo artist was in 2005 with Hustle Grind Shine, Cash Feat LP and performed freestyles with his group "Undergraduate Lyricists (U.L)." He has worked with several local artists and one major. His stage name now is "Phantom" and his dreams are to be the peoples' next icon in the Hip Hop & Rap genre.
He has worked with Tomorrow Allen in New York and Universal Record artists. Later he relocated to Florida working with unsigned and independent artists like producer Tay Jones and Preacher in Orlando, Florida and 50/50 Music, Inc./Konvict Muzik artist Qwes.
His mix tape “I’ll Be Home One Day” was written to send a message about his experiences learned from enlisting in the military. The song is about a brave individual serving their country leaving their home and family. The CD will also release a song “Million Wayz” featuring Qwes. This song is about how people have a million ways to achieve their goals in life and a millions ways to do it.
Ms. Conte: What major artist in the Hip Hop & Rap genre?
“I really liked Tupac and looked up to Mos Def, Nas and Eminem because of their flawless lyrical capability, delivery and style. I also look up to Jay-Z in particular because I admire his business ethics.”
Like Jay-Z, Magee is an all around businessperson, “jack of all trades,” one would say. He is the founder and CEO of Infantry, Inc. and making a mark in the music industry. His dynamic ability to write flawless lyrics continues to improve and his songs phenomenally develop in his head with most lyrics and songs being universal. He has a unique lyrical writing and sound sending diverse and versatile messages behind every verse to his rapidly growing fan base.
Ms. Conte: How do you come up with song ideas?
“There are times where I receive a new instrumental and I don’t write anything to it, I just listen to it over and over for like ten minutes listening to all the pieces that make that instrumental (all the sounds). Then I write to it perfect!”
As a songwriter, he manages to impress the listeners by giving relevant meaning to what he’s feeling or what he’s going through at the time. Most of his songs tell his listeners a more moral story.
Ms. Conte: What are your goals in your music career?
“My musical vision is climbing to the top by expressing my feelings through impeccable words that will deliver diverse and versatile messages allowing me to sing any genre of music.”
In conclusion, Magee inherited diverse talent and people will hear his voice whether it be collaborating with country, rock singers, freestyle or any other genre, but what is known, he has the determination to be heard worldwide.
He believes that the future of music will be the roots of many things and music will only get better and will grow beyond the limit of the skies.
