Hiring your First Employees: Crucial Tips to Remember

We all know how difficult it is to hire employees especially nowadays when more and more applicants lie in their resume and when tips and guidelines about how to ace an interview exist in thousands of articles in the Internet. But do you know what is more difficult? It is doing this hiring process for the first time.

But fortunately, there are some proven measures you can undertake to ensure that even if it were your first time to hire employees, you would still be able to get the best of the best to work for your start-up business.

1. Effective Job Description

Writing a job description is the first step you have to do in the hiring process. This is to let people know that you are looking for employees to work for your company. Writing it effectively is a good way to ensure that you attract the best kind of potential employees out there.

A good job description should include the following:

Title – this is the name of the position which must be relevant, creative and attractive to people.

Duties and responsibilities – the tasks that the employee will actually do in your company. It should not only list the tasks but also present them in a way that the person reading the job ad will have an idea on the rank of tasks according to priority. Make sure that the combination of tasks you assign for the position is not an impossible feat. Remember, you are looking for a great employee not Superman.

Qualifications – these are the skills, certifications, attributes and educational background required for a person to be able to perform the tasks well. Always be clear when stating qualifications.

For example, if you are looking for a web developer, instead of writing vague terms like “computer proficient,” be more clear with something like, “should have advanced skills on CSS, HTML and JavaScript.” This will save you a lot of time from having to deal with people who are computer proficient but do not have the necessary skills required to build a website.

Background of your company – always remember that great employees are attracted only to companies that have good background. Even if you are still starting in your business, you can show the efficiency of your company by stating clear goals and objectives.

Salary and benefits – this is an optional part since some employers choose to reveal this information during the interview. But if you want to attract good employees, it would make sense to state an attractive salary and benefits in your job ad.

Location and contact information – be sure to specify how applicants can get in touch with your company.

2. Excellent hiring procedure

Even when you are still starting with your business, it is already necessary that you build a hiring procedure, which you can use when recruiting employees. You should be consistent with these steps and be more stringent with those applying for very important positions.

Some of the basics steps that should be included in your hiring process are:

  • Examinations – these can either be written or practical examinations testing the applicant’s skills and knowledge related to the position being applied for. Be sure that the tests are relevant to the position. It does not make sense to test a person’s skills in geometry and physics if you are looking for a web writer.

  • Interview – this is a crucial step that enables you to meet the applicant face to face and to get to know more about him or her. Do not only listen to what the applicant is saying but also examine his or her nonverbal actions, which will reveal more about the applicant’s personality.

  • Employment background check– this involves activities such as criminal background checks that investigate the background of the applicant. Aside from this, other information gathered from this check include medical records, educational background, employment history and social security number among many others

3. Final Decision

When choosing employees to work for your company, be sure to choose one who has the appropriate skills and knowledge required for the position, the passion for the work and the commitment and determination to excel in his or her career.

Surely, hiring your first employees can be a daunting experience. It is time consuming and can be frustrating most of the time. But with these effective techniques, it will so much easier for you to find great employees to work for you.
