History Of Ball-Pen

The ball point pen originated in Europe in the 1940s through a Hungarian named Biro. He knew there had to be a better way of writing than relying on nib pens all the time.

He invented and pattented the ball concept to manage the thicker ink and control the flow. The British Airforce brought the ballpoint pen into more common usage during the war as they realised the value they had for pilots as the pens would work at higher altitudes and not leak like a fountain pen.

The first person to introduce ball point pens to the USA was a guy called Reynolds but they were incredibly expensive at something like $10 each (in the 1940s remember).

A Frenchman, Marcel Bich, was the first to mass produce ball point pens and the BIC pen company still produces the cheapest ball point by the millions.

Sorry this hub is so short but I know this much about the topic!!

Very nice article! I also love pens and did a lot of research on the topic. I agree $10 in the 40's was huge. Funny, now ballpoints are the economic ones and fountain pens are usually the more expensive ones.
