Real History of Christmas - Why Christmas is Celebrated on 25th of December
77When and Where Jesus born? -Story behind Birth of Jesus
Christmas comes on the 25th of December. This is the day when Jesus Christ is believed to be born. What year was Jesus born? This is really simple; just count back the calendar year that you are in. It is interesting to know that AD stands for Anno Domini or Anno Domini Nostri Lesu, which in Medieval Latin means, “In the Year of Our Lord Jesus Christ". And B.C. obviously, stands for Before Christ.
Christians believe that mother Mary conceived Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. While she was still a virgin, she had the divine revelation from angel Gabriel, that she would conceive a son to be born the son of God. This revelation is also celebrated as the feast of Annunciation, which come on the 25th of March. Mother Mary was yet to be married to St Joseph. However when St Joseph found that Mother Mary was pregnant even before they came together, he decided to break the commitment quietly. However, an angel from God appeared to Joseph and informed him about the conception from Holy Spirit and that the one to be born was the Son of God.
During this time, Rome was a great empire ruled by Augustus Caesar and Israel was ruled King Herod. The Roman Empire commanded all to participate in the empire wide census; for which everyone had to travel to their respective ancestral land. As Joseph belonged to the house of David, he traveled from Nazareth to Judea with the pregnant Mary. While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for the child to be born. Since there were no rooms available for them, the son of God was born in a manger!

Why Jesus Christ Send to Earth ?
The Christians believe that Jesus Christ, the son of God was sent to the earth to save the mankind from the clutches of sin. From the Old Testament in the Bible, we can see how God spoke to his people through prophets. However, from the New Testament we see that God sent his only son. Jesus showed us the importance of love for God, love for our brethren, righteousness and forgiveness.
Importance of 25th of December ?
However, there are many arguments that Jesus was not born precisely on the 25th of December. Isaac Newton claimed that Christmas began to be celebrated after winter solstice. Solstice astronomically marks a point when the sun is at its greatest angular distance. If you are in the Northern hemisphere, you’ll have the solstice in December.
Seasonally, this is the point when days start becoming longer than nights. There are also arguments that December 25th was the Roman Solar holiday. Another argument is that the date of 25th of December was arrived as exactly 9 months from the date of Annunciation.
- The Christian community believes Jesus to be the son of God, who came to save mankind from the clutches of sin.
- Muslims believe Jesus to be a god sent prophet.
- Historians consider Jesus as a great philosopher.
However, it is undeniable that Jesus Christ was a great man who walked the face of the earth 2000 years ago.
