Holi

Holi is a colorful spring Indian festival. This day people (mainly Hindus) throw coloured water on each other and apply colour on each other's face. Most people prefer to apply and use dry and harmless colour called "gulal". Holi-related songs are sung and played everywhere. The whole of India looks very colourful this day. Many tourists and foreigners also visit India to take part and enjoy Holi.

Many theories are associated with the origin of Holi. The most common belief is that Holi marks the day when Bhakt Prahlad, the devotee of lord Vishnu, seated on the lap of demoness Holika but was saved from the effect of the fire by God and the demoness got burnt instead. Other stories relate to the death of demon Putana at the hands of lord Krishna and to the burning of demoness Hoda by children. Few people also link the festival of Holi with the worship of Karma, the God of pleasure and destiny.

Holi: Colourful Indian Spring festival

Holi marks the harvest season and celebration and the climax of spring. On the eve of Holi, bonfires are lit, marking the end of winter and the death of evil. The next day, that is the day of Holi, is full of colours. People throw water and colour on each other. They all pray, fast and feast. People have fun throwing coloured powder and colourful water at each other, dancing and gambling over cards.

To celebrate the end of evil with all the colors that come out of light through a prism is beautiful to see. Much like a rainbow after a terrible storm of despair. It reminds me of the Hispanic words connected with the church: De Colores, used to celebrate all the colors of God and what he has made, including people.

Thanks for sharing this!

A timely Post. A Thumbs up to you. I am actually allergetic to colors and stay away from Holy festivities and do not get out of home. However, I don't mind watching the Holy fun.
