Holly Madison is best known as Hugh Hefner's former number one girlfriend on the reality series The Girls Next Door. I do believe little thought had been given to her pre-break-up. Beautiful, young, and one of three; one might lightly assume she's an opportunist making the best of a situation presented to her to get her foot in the door of show business. And yet, the news of the break-up has made me reconsider her entirely.

Apparently to those who watch the show it is no news that Holly Madison wanted to marry Hugh and have him father her child. This is a common theme of the Gold Digger. Heather Mills followed the model set forth a very long time ago. However, the role of mistress is often settled upon and not too shabby. Holly Madison, by breaking up with Hugh Hefner, shook up the preconceived notion that all of the Playboy Girlfriends are opportunist gold-diggers. No doubt her career as a Girlfriend has taken off. She's now been featured in Playboy and has a hit reality tv show. She could definitely go further continuing down her path rather than diverting to date a Las Vegas magician. If Holly Madison is only looking for a meal ticket and quick ride to the top, Chris Angel is a bump in the road. Instead, it appears that she is following her heart. She's looking for an available man she can build a future with and who can start a family. It seems the media scoffs at Angel, but considering she's left a married geriatric with a fidelity problem I'd say she's doing better.

Hef, on the other hand appears to have traded down. Break-ups are difficult. No matter who you are. And watching theirs play out in the media hits home that the rules apply to everyone. You want to be the person to date first and you want to trade up. Hef is scrambling to replace his girls and has wound up with Karissa and Kristina Shannon. These girls are twins who have been arrested for fighting each other. They don't exactly sound like winners. And what sort of sisters want to share the same man?
