Hollywood B to Bollywood H

Saawariya, the Hindi title which means beloved, is the first Bollywood musical flick with courtesy of Hollywood. Columbia Tri-Star, the division of Sony Pictures Entertainment which has produced the much awaited and hyped directorial venture of a veteran Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, puts its rolls in the projector of Indian cinema by taking centre-stage to produce Saawariya. And many other Hollywood studios are also keen on making money and doing business with the collaboration of bollywood. But Saawariya would always be the first name in this holly-bolly connection.

Saawariya is based on Russian Writer Fyodo Dostoevsky's short story ‘White Nights'. Toned very artistically and crafted very audadidactly, it is a love story of two crossed lovers whose passions and emotions bring them at the blink of self destruction. Craftsman Sanjay Leela Bhansali's subtle attempt of telling the story of agonies and ecstasies of love through magnificent and dream catchy sets with typical dance numbers and bollywood music caught the eye and an instant cognizance of Gareth Wigan, wise president of Columbia Tri-Star. "He read the script and left me completely alone and indepedendent to make the movie" said Sanjay in an interview with Indian trade analyst Taran Aadarsh in a TV show. Sanjay who remains always adamant in demand of time, independence and patience, was surprised by Columbia Tri-star's attitude of giving him full freedom to make the movie.

Sanjay, whose last movie ‘Black' was acclaimed critically all over the world, started his colorful venture of Saawariya with two debutantes Ranbir Kapoor (son of Indian actor Rishi Kapoor and the fourth generation to kapoor legacy) and Sonam Kapoor (daughter of versatile Indian actor Anil Kapoor). It took almost two years to complete the movie. And after two years of hard work, what followed was a complete celerity in production. The very first promo of the movie created waves and soon gave a gaggle to talk about the whole artistic grandeur. People went crazy over the 2 minutes vision. Columbia Tri-star also gave a nod of great satisfaction after seeing the movie. But in actuality it turned out to be a lukewarm with mixed reviews after its release.

This may not be a new bite of your breakfast toast but what's new for you is the reviewed excellence of creativity under the brand name Hollywood. Yes, the movie was released worldwide on November 9th with its prints in more than 80 theatres in North America and got mixed and mystified reviews of the mainstream commercial cinema and the cinematic excellence. The energizing beats of Saawariya failed to woo the Indian audiences but definitely gained recognition in US and Europe. Movie got the opening collection of 60 crores Indian Rupees which makes $1.5 millions. Inspite of that it failed to survive for a longer term. But it has managed to reach the category of beautiful movies of human emotions and musical creation of art or vice-versa. So now, the heater is hot for a new creativity called co-cinema since it has given the words to talk about culture connection and cinema expansion.

Looking at the holly-bolly connection, one of my friends asked me, "Have Indian movies come closer to Oscars?" In my instant reply to his question I said, "I don't know, whether we have moved ahead in the Oscar race or not, but we have definitely found an entente for global as well as regional touch of cinema. The reference here is not only the bollywood but the holly-bolly-wood. Hollywood has got more familiarity in the regional world of Bollywood and Bollywood has got more global recognition because of Hollywood's natal presence in various nations of the world like France, UK, Germany, Spain, Japan, Mexico and Canada. And involvement of cinemas of the world is the core topic of critiques and discussions." Earlier presence of Hollywood was restricted to the taste of fewer Indian audiences. Then it started dubbing movies in Indian languages according to the growing market needs. Now at this time of saturation point of Hollywood productions being cast in Indian multiplexes, an effective approach of tie up of Hollywood production houses and Bollywood studios has come into execution.

Hollywood has definitely approached for making Hindi movies but with a proper Hollywood agenda that could fit into Bollywood market. Gareth Wigan says, "The importing of American films into India is not filling a gap. You're not bringing a dish to a bare table. You're bringing a dish to a crowded table where you have to move a lot of other dishes to fit it in, and that's not true in a lot of other countries." Yes, Bollywood has its own market and fare of indigenous movies. It would be really a hasty decision to go ahead with complete operation of a Bollywood project. The trip has just started, so why not wait for more alternatives to come. But this trip is on the way of becoming a long tour with the participation of other studios. Walt Disney has partnered with Indian production house Yash Raj studio to make their next animated flick Roadside Romeo which is on due for release in next year. Warner Brothers and Paramount Pictures have also stepped forward in this collaboration business. Apart from productions, the Indian stars who will mark their presence in Hollywood next year are Aishwarya Rai who will be seen doing stunts in Pink Panther 2, Amitabh Bachchan to be cast in a Mira Nair Flick with Johny Depp and Irfan Khan who will joculously entertain us in next of the Ocean's series.

The ideology behind this whole theme is not a biased deal but a deal that could bring world cinema at one projected Dias. The words culture and creativity have emerged as the mainstream business phenomenon with the gift of communicative connection. An approach that can make all the cinema industries as Cinemawood, is the destination of so called cross-over cinema globalization. I think all cinema lovers would love this idea of upliftment in more better regards such that creators of art always come first in front than anyone else since a creator approaches every other creator and a business approaches every other business.
