Stars go to Oscar and Grammy parties covered with rented luxury. These celebrities "borrow" trinkets and clothing from designers and boutiques around the world all the time. Jewelers and Haute Couture are always dying to let them wear their creations, and lend them out for big award events.

Come to think of it, reusing products is a good idea, helping to decrease consumer costs and the amount of waste going to disposal. Less purchasing of limited use goods not only saves money, but also resources and energy as well. Many companies are recognizing the potential that exist for "renting" products rather than selling them outright. These are the so called Product service systems (PSS for short).

Bag, Borrow, or Steal

Bag, Borrow, or Steal was highlighted on E! News and the Tyra Bank a while back. For those who haven't heard of it, the service allows you to basically rent or rent-to-own expensive designer purses. Jewelry can be "borrowed" too, which is great for weddings and other occasions where you'd like to showcase your great taste without going bankrupt. Once everyone has "seen it", you never want to wear these costly items again and end up wanting to buy something new for each big event

It all started years ago when the founders began asking some questions: Why should women have to endure the emotional and financial sacrifices that accompany the endless search for the "right" accessory for every event, wedding, and dinner party? Why should celebrities, fashion editors, and socialites be the only ones allowed to borrow fashion accessories? Why not give everyone access to the perfect accoutrement for every occasion? To find out more about their story check this article.

Now mere mortals can rent that classy purse, look fabulous, impress friends and then return it when another must-have bag is found. With the click of a button, women can choose Coach bags, Louis Vuittons, Prada and more. They can keep their rentals for as little as a week or as long as a year, and have the option of purchasing their favorites for less than retail price. Membership is $9.95 a month. Rental fees depend on the bag, some of which cost up to $2,500 retail.

Borrowed Bling

In the same manner, BorrowedBling (also aired on the Tyra Banks show and E! News) offers a solution for getting that upscale and fashionable "celebrity look" - without having to make costly investments. It is like having a "Netflix-like" site for jewels and accessories at your fingertips. Being a member compares to having an upscale exclusive department store at your disposal 24/7, where you are encouraged to wear and then return the items. They have everything from Gucci to Omega watches. Designer pieces available include Christian Dior, John Hardy, Judith Ripka, Roberto Coin, Rolex and TAG Heuer.

Be Green and fashionable at the same time. Look great wearing your designer's jewelry and accessories without having to take a second mortgage on your house. Next time you absolutely need that "thing", don't buy, rent. It will be great for your sanity, not to mention your budget and the environment.
