Home Based Internet Business

If you are thinking about starting a home business that involves using the Internet in some shape or form, you might be feeling worried about where to start. Well, if you happen to enjoy writing articles on topics that interest you, you might want to get into the home business of online writing.

While you can purchase domain names and hosting services and start up your own niche websites, another path to consider, especially when you are just starting out in your online writing career, is to write for ad revenue sharing sites such as HubPages. Why is this kind of online writing a good option for beginners?

Write for HubPages, eHow, Infobarrel and Other Websites

Well, for starters, what you would be investing is your time rather than your money. When you write for HubPages (or eHow or Infobarrel) or other similar sites, you don’t have to spend money on domain names or on web hosting. Similarly, you can also start a blog (that you can later monetize) on one of the free blog hosting services, such as Blogger. (This is another way to avoid paying any start up costs, especially if money is tight.)

If you do decide to take this path, what you will be investing is your time (and your writing efforts) rather than your money. That is, since you will be doing all of the writing yourself, but you will not be laying out any funds. So, the question then becomes, do you have enough time to devote to your online writing to really make a go of it as a home business?

Learn SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Techniques

Perhaps you are a work at home mom or a work at home dad and your children are at school for a good portion of the day. If this is the case, and if you do not have too many other time commitments that would impede your progress, you might have enough time during the day to make a real go of this type of home business. Similarly, if you are a college student and you are seeking to make some part time income, writing for such sites in your spare time could work for you.

Keep your expectations reasonable. That is, don’t expect to start making a lot of money right off the bat. These websites are based on the principle of passive income (also known as residual income), meaning that you post an article (or in the case of HubPages, you post a Hub), and then you market that Hub, and over time, you will start seeing some traffic coming to that Hub or article. It’s when you start seeing traffic that you start seeing some income.

Take the time to read all that you can about SEO or search engine optimization as well as proper keyword usage. After all, when you write on topics that are of interest to larger numbers of readers, you naturally increase your odds of getting your articles read and making money from them. (On a similar note, take the time to learn about the importance of creating backlinks to your online content.)

Above all else, don’t give up too soon. This is a mistake that many novices make. Don’t work too many hours a day on your online writing home business, because if you take that approach, you are at a much greater risk of burning out quickly and/or giving up on the whole thing. Once you are earning some money from your Hubs and other online articles you can think about starting to invest some funds in your online writing home business, perhaps by outsourcing some of your content writing, and/or by investing in some of your own web properties.
