Home Business and The Baby Boomer - Is That Work?
52Retirement Accounts Busted By Wall Street
Where is a boomer to turn...
Many baby boomers thought retirement was going to be okay. They had saved, invested in real estate, bought stocks from a local broker and generally things looked rosy.
Along came the current financial meltdown and soon many baby boomers found themselves "under water" in the value of their home as well as the value of their retirement account. No longer can they sell their biggest asset, their home, and gain. Now many owe more on their home then it is worth due to real estate values continued decline. Until the housing issue is addressed in Washington little hope is in the housing forecast.
Until the time that they are able to sell their home most boomers are stuggling to come to grips with the continued downward trend of their retirement account or 401K.
As reported in this New York Times article the net assets people 45-54 had earned interest on just 5 years ago was about $14,000 annually. That same boomer now earns just under $8,000 for interest. Not nearly enough to live the comfortable life they thought they were going to have.
Today, with over three million Baby Boomers heading towards retirement, we see that they are anything but finished making their mark on society. Regardless of whether they left their jobs on their own, or due to harsh economic times the jobs left them – these people are not about to plop down in a rocking chair anytime soon!
So what’s booming now because of this Boomer demographic powerhouse?
Home-based businesses! Yes, the Boomers have begun to market on the internet. Everything from health products, travel memberships to products the "older" generation is starting to need.
The learning curve of internet marketing is taken in stride by the Boomer because they would never want to admit a young whipper snapper was better. Many Boomers see the internet as a way to earn while they learn and still stay at home.
The push to find the right business to market online has propelled many to choose the wrong product or service. Boomers are easy prey for the savy hype sellers and often become discouraged before succeeding.
What should a Baby Boomer look for? The most important of all facts to keep in mind - Is there a team behind me to help when I need it. Not one that just collects my money and then becomes hard to reach or silent.
Boomers like to feel that they are a part of a team and can accomplish great things. One belief is that they learned from their parents how to survive in depressionist times. That learning to adjust is a large part of what makes Baby Boomers special.
