Understanding home electrical basics is a part if many home improvement projects and DIY home repair and maintenance. I recommend that all homeowners should have basic knowledge and understanding of home electrical and circuitry and wiring. Such knowledge can help you in many jobs related to your home's electrical systems and home appliances / kitchen appliances. Such repair work can also be easy and safer if you follow all the basic safety measures and precautions.

Some of the home electrical equipments like the doorbell work on very low voltage and are safer and easier to work on. Standard-voltage lights and receptacles are comparatively harder to work on. One should always keep in mind that before working on any such project, always disconnect the power from an electrical system.

Understanding Basics of Home Electrical

Understanding basics of home electrical and wiring is quite easy. All home appliances, lights and receptacles are connected to the primary standard-voltage system or power line and distributed across the home through wiring.

In any residential power supply, 3 wires enter most homes from the power pole: two "hot" wires and a third "neutral" wire. Each hot wire provides 120-volt current and when both hot wires are used with the neutral wire, it supplies 240 volt. Normal lights, receptacles, and home and kitchen appliances use 120V while appliances such as air conditioner and electric ovens need 240V.

Many homes also have transformers that convert standard power to lower to about 6 to 12 Volts for systems such as the doorbell, security systems etc.

PS: Before working on any home electrical system or appliance. Always disconnect it from the power source.
