The term dandruff refers to the condition of the skin wherein shiny, silvery scales separate from the scalp and collect amidst the hair. The condition can become troublesome when the skin gets infected. If left untreated, it may turn into a more serious problem even leading to baldness in extreme cases.

At times due to unawareness you are not able to ascertain whether you have dandruff problem or not. Itching is the first sign of the presence of dandruff. Kids and even adults at times, scratch their scalp to such an extent that it becomes red. With the onset of the problem, when the hair is combed or the scalp is scratched the scales fall on the shoulders and the face.

Dandruff is caused due to drying of the scalp that may be due to several reasons. Improper hair care, use of harsh shampoos, exposure to extreme heat and cold and exhaustion are some of the causes. Toxicity resulting due to wrong intake of food, constipation, and a low vitality to infectious diseases may also cause the problem.

There are several home remedies available for dandruff cure. Fenugreek seeds have been found to be one of the most important remedies for treatment of dandruff. Soak a handful of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Grind it in the morning to form a thick paste. Apply the paste on to your scalp generously and leave it to dry on its own. It normally takes 30-45 minutes to dry. The scalp should then be cleansed thoroughly with soap nut solution or shikakai. Lime juice is another cure for dandruff. Two tablespoons of fresh lime juice should be used for the last rinse while washing the hair to get rid of dandruff. Its regular use not only removes dandruff but also makes the hair look shiny and non sticky.

Gram powder is also used in India as a cure for dandruff. A handful of gram powder should be mixed with a cup of curd to form a thick paste. The paste should be applied to the hair and scalp and left for drying. Utmost care should be taken while washing out the paste as it leaves a pungent smell if not properly washed.

Beet preferably white beet can also be used for dandruff cure. The top and root of beet should be boiled in water. The water should then be used for massaging on to the scalp with the finger tips every night.

Dermatologists also suggest that one should have a well balanced diet to remain away from dandruff. Fresh fruits and vegetables should form part of the food habits. People suffering from dandruff should avoid citrus fruits, bananas and tinned fruits. Also, strong tea/coffee, refined and processed food should be avoided.
