Turmeric - Benefits

Turmeric belongs to the ginger family. It grows in tropical region and requires abundant water to thrive. It is used widely in South Asian especially in Indian cuisine. You will find the powder being added to almost all Indian curries. It is available in powder or as fresh roots.

Fact: Ayurveda, the Indian Medical System clearly documents turmeric as an antiseptic and antibacterial. It has been used for its medicinal value since 1900 BC in India.

Benefit: Turmeric paste was applied to burn victim so that the skin does not get infected.

Fact: The most important component of Turmeric is curcumin. A lot of clinical tests have shown curcumin to have anti-tumor,anti-oxidant, anti-arthritic, anti-amyloid, anti-ischemic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Benefit:
In addition it may be effective in treating malaria, prevention of cervical cancer prostate cancer and colon cancer, and may interfere with the replication of the HIV virus. Much research has been done in the last couple of year to study the effects of curcumin on cancer cells.

Benefit: The anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties help in alleviating the pain associated with arthritis. It can be used as a treatment for both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Benefit: Alzheimer’s disease is caused by  formation of plaques (amyloid A) between neurons (nerve cells). It is suggested that curcumin may clear amyloid A accumulation by increasing the activity of macrophages to eat away the plaques. Serious research is also being done to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease using curcumin.

Benefit: The presence of curcumin in turmeric can reduce the level of LDL leading to lesser bad cholesterol and a health heart.

Ingredients:
Milk 2% or 1% or Fat Free – 1 mug
Turmeric Powder – ½ teaspoon

Step 1: Boil Milk in a pan.
Step 2: Add the Turmeric Powder.
Step 3: Stir and leave in low heat for sometime.
Step 4: Allow to cool and drink.

Good for good digestive health, metabolism and people with arthritis.

Ingredients:
Turmeric Powder or Fresh Turmeric ground into a paste – 1/2 teaspoon
Gram Flour – 1 table spoon (Available in Indian stores)
Milk Cream – ½ table spoon

Info: If you are asking "What the heck is Milk Cream?" here you go - When you heat milk and leave it out for a while, you get a thin skin kind of thing floating on top. The longer you heat milk in low temperature more milk cream will form on top.

Step 1: Add all of the above ingredients
Step 2: Mix them well (using hand)
Step 3: Apply on skin
Step 4: Leave for a few hours before washing away in cold water (no soap or cleanser)
Step 5: Apply more often for better results.

wow nice hub, I study herbology and in fact use it often in my fictional writings. Great info, I had no idea that tasty ingredient in my curry powder was so versatil.

Thanks rallenbrewster for the comments. Well I knew it had some goodness but had no idea it was this good until I did my research. You might also want to look at the other ones in the series. I thinking about adding more such hubs in that series. Thanks again.

I have used turmeric for bacterial infection on skin,it works and also with warm water for cough,it works.
