1. Home Security Systems are Incredibly Costly

This certainly used to be the case. And, if you're not careful now, it still can be. However, with a little research you can find an affordable system that offers you excellent protection, especially if you are willing to roll-up your sleeves and do some of the work yourself.

2. All Alarm Systems Require a Service Contract

While some companies require service contracts, many do not. You can purchase a system, install it and that's it. No contract required.

3. You must have Systems Installed by a Professional

If you are looking for a simple, but effective system, this isn't true. Even with hardwired systems, the intelligent homeowner can install their own systems. This is even more the case with wireless systems. Also, your company should offer free technical support when you are installing their product.

4. Monitoring Services are Too Expensive

First of all, this isn't true. You can find 24/7 monitoring for as little as $9 per month. However, even if it does cost you a little, there is something else to take into account. You very well may experience a decrease in the cost of your homeowner's insurance. Call your insurance provider and ask them if they offer this type of savings.

5. There will be Too Many False Alarms

Systems are now designed with children and/or pets in mind. For example, many motion sensors now offer pet-immunity to prevent them from accidentally triggering an alarm.

6. I'm Not at Risk for a Break-In

Unfortunately for most readers, this simply isn't the case. Burglaries are generally crimes of opportunity. If it appears you aren't home or that your house is unprotected, it doesn't matter where you live. However, even if that were the case, you're still at risk for fires, carbon monoxide, etc. So, even if you believe that you are not at risk for a break in, you still do need a system of some level.

7. It's Impossible to Hardwire an Existing Home

It is possible to hardwire an existing home. It may be more difficult, but it's still possible. Contact your supplier for ideas on how to best hide your wires.

8. You Can't Trust Wireless Security Systems

This certainly used to be true. However, advances in technology have now turned this objection into a myth. Most wireless systems use unique frequencies to avoid interference. These systems are now very reliable, and are much easier to install than a hardwired system.

9. You have to be a Professional to Program a System

If you programmed your VCR, you can program an alarm system. Also, your system should come with directions to make this easier for you; and the company that you purchased this from should offer free technical support to make this even easier.

10. It's Easy for Burglars to Disable your Alarm

Because of advances in the technology, you can now arm and disarm your wireless system using a remote. This means that your system can be located in a secure area, where the burglars will be less likely to find it and disable it. Still, if this is a major concern for you, a hardwired system may be your best option.
