A complete guide to home teeth whitening methods, including the advantages and disadvantages of different methods.

Home teeth whitening is a popular way for people to whiten and remove stains from their teeth. Many people become unhappy with their teeth being stained, often in an unattractive yellow brown colour, and the negative impression it gives to the people who they interact with at work or in their social life. Home kits can be a great way to solve this problem and reduce the overall teeth whitening cost, without having to leave their home and pay for expensive dental treatment. Home kits for whitening teeth are now commonly available in the high street and online, at a wide range of prices ranging from a few pounds or dollars, up to one hundred pounds or more.

One of the most obvious products for home teeth whitening is toothpaste with a whitening agent. These can be great for preventing stain build-up throughout the day, but if your teeth are already badly coloured you might need to look elsewhere for a solution. There are also some toothpastes which contain bleaching agents are meant to be used at most once or twice as a whitening solution, but be careful before you buy one because many are said to cause possible tooth damage because of their high strength. Brushing your teeth regularly (twice a day is the recommended amount) is still one of the most important ways to prevent staining and discolouration of the teeth.

A popular reason for people to use home products to whiten their teeth, is to avoid the teeth whitening cost associated with dental treatment. Home methods are usually far cheaper than what a dentist would charge for a similar treatment. One of the most popular home treatment methods is teeth whitening gels and trays. Teeth whitening trays generally work by using a bleaching agent, such as hydrogen peroxide, which is delivered through a tray which fits around the teeth. Trays are usually left on for around an hour at a time, and several sessions can be used until the whitening effect is reached. Whitening gels work in largely the same way, except without the tooth trays. They are applied to the teeth and left over a period of time before being removed. Again this process can be repeated until your preferred whitening level is achieved.

There are literally dozens of tray and gel treatments available on the market nowadays, and they can easily be bought in the supermarket, in pharmacies or via online mail order. There are also magazines and pamphlets available which can give you more details on specific treatments. While most treatments are completely safe when you follow the instructions correctly, some products are safer and work better than others. Before you buy, you should read reviews and get advice on which product to choose, to be sure that your home teeth whitening will be a complete success.
