How to keep your teeth clean and sparkling white?

The not so easy method is to skip coffee, cola drinks, chocolate, cigarette, Chardonnay and other items. But luckily there are some easy tips for us.

  1. Snack on Celery or carrots or cucumbers - These foods require quite a bit of chewing, which increases saliva production and it flushes away food stains according to New York City Dentist Lana Rozenberg.
  2. Chew sugarless gums after you consume the food or drinks.
  3. Mouth wash with water after you eat or drink to eliminate food stains. It also keeps your breath fresh otherwise you will smell of the food you eat.
  4. When drinking colas or coffee avoid direct contact with front sides of the teeth to prevent stains. You can use a straw for this.
  5. Tobacco is the top tooth stainer, so avoiding it is the best solution, if not use any of the methods here.
  6. Eat Strawberries - When strawberry is combined with baking soda, the mixture creates a chemical called malic acid which acts as an astringent to remove tooth surface discoloration.
  7. There is also another method you can use white distilled vinegar by brushing once or twice a week with white distilled vinegar. It whitens your teeth and eliminates bad breath. You can use a little tooth paste along with this if you can’t handle the taste of vinegar. I use this method it is very effective.
  8. Apple's juices also reduces stains (Tip from Stacie).
  9. Lemon juice and Baking Soda mixture (Tip from Shirley).

So, instead of paying costly teeth whitening methods or treatments, we can use any of these simpler methods.

Good info. Apples are also supposed to be great for cleaning your teeth. Also, the ingredient you want to look for in sugarless gum is xylitol.

Good hub, thx for sharing these tips. I've also used lemon juice & baking soda.

I'm curious to know if you found that vinegar gets rid of tobacco stains.

Shirley, thanks, I will add yours and Stacie's tips, very useful ones. Regarding the tobacco stains, I don't smoke so I am not sure, but distilled vinegar is safe to use, you can try a little at a time for a few days and see how it works. I use them twice a week along with night brushing, it really helps.

Mundargi08, also it is natural and we don't have to use too many chemicals. It does an effective job.

I find an electric toothbrush keeps my teeth much cleaner and whiter than an analogue one.

cgull8m:  I followed LondonGirl here (kind of) and I'm glad I did.  I use an electric brush as well, but I noticed that the backs of my lower teeth are stained (and I drink coffee, tea, and smoke a little) and I've been meaning to look up some good home remedies for whitening teeth.  I found this at exactly the right time!

Thanks for writing it!  Your a tooth saver!

And I followed Christoph over here and I'm glad I did as my teeth tend to be very porous and stain easily. Back in my drinking days red wine wreaked havoc on my smile (purple teeth!). I thank you for a whole host of good tips for keeping teeth white and breath fresh. Thanks! MM

Thanks LondonGirl, Christoph, Mighty Mom, glad to share it with you guys. Electric brush does a great job, I agree whole heartedly. Another thing we should all do is mouth wash immediately after food that keeps the stains away.
