Making your own lye soap is a very popular and fun hobby with unbelievable benefits. Before I start going in too deeply into the homemade lye soap making procedure, I think I need to stress some safety tips first. As you could probably guess from the name of the soap, lye is one of the main ingredients in the soap making process. It is a chemical used even in drain cleaners due to its caustic properties and is also known as Caustic Soda or Sodium Hydroxide. So here is a few safety tips to make sure that your wonderful soapmaking day is filled with endless fun.
Do keep in mind that although lye is a dangerous chemical and should be used with the proper respect, it is also used by numerous soap making fans on a daily basis without incident. Just stick to the safety precautions and you will have hours of joy and fun. Read the manufacturer's notes from all the chemicals you use in the process. Make the effort to do your own research, ask the right questions to the right people and plan ahead. Also remember that this safety guideline does not overrule any advice from a trained professional, medical advisor or manufacturer's notes.
HomeMade Soap Recipe: Recycle your soap.
Soap is one of those things we tend to take for granted, especially that last bit of soap which usually end up in a trash bin even though you can actually still use it quite a bit. Here is a stunning idea on how you could make your homemade soap go that extra mile. It is a great way to save money, save time and even a means by which you can do your little bit to help save the environment. A brilliant homemade soap recipe to say the least.
The first step you need to implement before anything else is to get yourself a recycle bin. Any bin in which you can store the bits of soap you would generally throw away will do. Save up all the little pieces of soap until you have enough to fill a few cups. If you wish to try this project for fun then simply grab some of your freshly created homemade soap, rip it into pieces as the ingredients for your first try.
What you need:
* A few cups of soap pieces.
* A blender.
*Scented oils (optional).
* Coloring (optional).
* A tin, bucket or other storage device (an empty hand soap dispenser works very well if you wish to keep it in your bathroom).
What you need to do:
1.Throw all your soap bits into a blender with a little bit of water.
2.Slowly chop all the soap bits in the blender, adding a bit of water and short intervals until the mix turns into a pudding type substance.
3.If you choose to add some colorant or scented oils then now would be a could time to add it. Only use a little bit and mix well.
4.Pour your liqiud into a bucket that has a sealable lid or into a hand soap dispenser.
5.Enjoy!
As simple and as complicated as that. Easy wasn't it? Make sure to keep the lid sealed at all times otherwise your soap will dry out. You can also dilute a couple of teaspoons of your new soap in a big bucket with really hot water to wash the workspace, floor or even your car. There simply is no easier and quicker way to save up on your soap, which in turn will help you to save time, money and even the environment. This is also one of numerous things that you can do, so don't be afraid of letting your imagination go.
Safety First:
* If any Lye comes into contact with your skin you should immediately rinse it with vinegar and then with cold water.
* Always make sure that the room is adequately ventilated.
* Always wear eye protection goggles (The goggles should preferrably seal eyes in the same manner as swimming goggles would).
* Always use chemical-resistant gloves.
* DO NOT SWALLOW. Lye can be fatal if swallowed. If ingested do not induce vomiting. Go to the emergency room immediately!
* Keep Lye and any essential oils out of reach of children. Keep it in a locked cabinet and NEVER leave it unattended for one second once you start using it.
* Lye has very strong fumes, so ALWAYS wear a safety mask that covers your mouth and nose.
* Wear a chemical resistant or rubber apron when working with Lye to protect your skin and your clothes.
* If Lye spills on your counter tops you should immediately wash it off, because it can remove paint and varnishes.
* ALWAYS KEEP AWAY FROM PETS, CHILDREN and anyone else NOT COMPETENT to work with Lye.
Containers:
* Always keep your Lye in an air tight container.
* Use safe containers like glass, enamel, plastic and stainless steel.
When using Lye always make sure that you are well versed in the safety precautions. If anything happens you need to act quickly so take the time and make the effort to plan for any accidents ahead! Prepare anything that you might need in case of an emergency before hand and rehearse what you will do in case of an accident. Keep the emergency phone numbers close by. As any medical experts for advice before working with any potentially dangerous chemicals, they could have valuable advice. Follow these basic steps and you could have hours of fun making your own homemade lye soap.
