WHAT IS MRSA?

MRSA is the most prevalent type of hospital-acquired infection in England, affecting 100,000 people or 44% of all such cases and costing the NHS £1bn. MRSA, which stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is one of a family of staphylococcal bacteria. Identified in the 1960s, it is resistant to conventional antibiotics, including penicillin and methicillin. Experts have uncovered 17 strains of MRSA with differing degrees of drug resistance. US scientists have detected a strain called VRSA, which is resistant to vancomycin, the drug used to treat MRSA when all others have failed. Source

There are numerous informative articles and webpages on the internet and Hubpages. This article presents potential homeopathic remedies that have been recorded as useful and curative in historical databases and books. Clarkes Clinical Repertory is one good reference. Homeopathy 911 by Eileen Nauman, D.H.M. is another. And the charts below were created on Kents ReferenceWorks Computer Program for Homeopaths.

What is a homeopathic consultation like?

Typically, a homeopath will do a two-hour consultation that documents all levels of the individual’s experience of his/her condition. This means at the very least recording the name of the disease, then the symptoms, then how the person feels and experiences those symptoms related to the disorder. In addition, many unusual questions will be asked about the person’s general state of health and normal condition when well, medical history, plus other particulars them.

It is a detailed process and then the information is analyzed in rubrics to discern the best matching remedy to fit the individual’s life pattern.

It is best not to try to treat your self, however, there are ‘top’ remedies that are used in certain situations. Most people are familiar with using Arnica for bumps, bruises, accidents and black and blue marks.

• Septic shock, a condition when the body is poisoned and the skin is full of or generating pus calls for the top two homeopathic sepsis remedies: Pyrogenium and Baptisia tinctoria.

As you will see below in the analysis section, there are hundreds of possible remedies that could be indicated with each symptom. We know that Staphylococcus is a type of bacteria that live on many skin surfaces, especially around mucus membranous areas like the nose, mouth, genitals, and anus. Other names for staph are Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Staphylococcus Aureus, and Staph A.

Sometimes when there is injury to the skin via a puncture wound, scrape, or cut an infection may occur when bacteria enter. Numerous cases have occurred in hospital settings after surgery. Wound infections generally show up 2 or more days after the injury or surgery. The signs of a wound infection (redness, pain, swelling, and warmth) are similar to those found in cellulitis. A wound infection may be accompanied by fever and a generally ill feeling. Pus or a cloudy fluid can drain from the wound and a yellow crust (like that in impetigo) can develop. There are more than 30 species in the staph family of bacteria, and they can cause different kinds of illnesses — for example, one kind of staph can cause urinary tract infections. But most staph infections are caused by the species Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). 

Listed below will be homeopathic remedies that address the localized infections of folliculitis, boils, impetigo, and cellulitis attributed to S. aureus.

FOLLICULITIS is an infection of the hair follicles when tiny white-headed pimples appear at the base of hair shafts. When infected they become red and inflamed. This may occur where people shave or have irritated skin from rubbing against clothing.

The folliculitis condition worsens to produce furuncles (boils) usually on the face, neck, buttocks, armpits, and inner thighs where small hairs can often be irritated. The boils may feel like a swollen, red, painful lump, which fills with pus, growing larger and more painful until it ruptures and drains.

Sensitive to open air and drafts, worse from washing and taking a bath. The crown of the head is very hot but the feet are cold. The soles of the feet burn at night; they must be put out of the bed. Hungry and starving at 11am, but not before then.There are vesicular, pustular, furuncular, scaly eruptions, all attended with much itching, and some of them with discharge and suppuration. The skin, even without any eruption, itches much, itches from the warmth of the bed and from wearing woolen clothing. Keeps on scratching until the skin becomes raw, or until it burns, and then comes a relief of the itching. Impetigo, abscesses.
• Rhus-tox - is best know to heal poison ivy outbreaks with blistering skin rash, that is worse for rainy weather. • Arsenicum album - A main remedy for eczema with burning and scratching. Very anxious about health. Constantly restless and desires company. Smelly diarrhea and vomiting after eating poisoned food. Restless, constantly changing position, with chilliness that is better with heat and company. Even while very ill concerned with things being neat and clean. Worse time of day is between 12PM and 2AM. All symptoms burn. Skin is dry as parchment and burning itch. Scratching makes itching worse, and applying heat soothes. Indigestion also has burning pain. Inflamed spots, red pimples that become ulcers, nettle rash, eruption of painful black, itchy pustules. Herpes. Nightly burning. Carbuncles. Inflammatory tumours with burning pains.Warts.
• Kali-bichromicum - Areas "fill up" with yellow discharge and person points to "spots" that ache. Skin ulcers with pustular eruptions. Inflammation and cracking of joints, acute nephritis. Keynote for thick, sticky, ropy, stringy touch, lumpy or thick discharges of mucus membranes. Mucus in pharynx, larynx, bronchi and nose STRINGY. Polyps. Pains in Small Spots. • Apis mellifica - Disease that comes suddenly and strong. Stinging. Erysipelas, with sensitiveness and swelling, rosy color. Carbuncles, with burning, stinging pain. Sudden puffing up of whole body. Hot and heat that is better for cool/cold application. For a dry fever that alternates with sweating, facial flushing, and a very sore throat with swollen tonsils. Pain may extend to the ears, and the eyelids may be swollen. Little thirst. Irritable, does not like to be disturbed.
• Psorinum - A nosode from disease matter is similar to sulphur. Whereas sulphur feels extremely hot; psorinum feels very cold and must keep a hat on. Outbreak of pustules and filthy discharge and dry skin.
• Lachesis - Skin is purple. Boils, carbuncles, ulcers and intense pain , malignant pustules; decubitus; dark, bluish, purple appearance; tend to malignancy.Worse for clothing around the neck. Does not want hot drinks.
• Thuja - known to help warty skin growths, helps blood, gastro-intestinal tract, kidneys, and brain. Variola, aborts the pustule and prevents the suppurating fever. Most symptoms on left side.
• Belladonna - fever comes shoots up suddenly. known for help strep throat and scarlet fever. Pain pulsing. Face and body hot, red skin, flushed, glaring eyes, throbbing carotids, excited mental state, very sensitive to noise and jarring, delirium, restless sleep, convulsive movements, dryness of mouth and throat with aversion to water, neuralgia.
• Echinacea -blood poison, sepsis, diarrhea, recurring boils. Carbuncles. Irritations from insect bites and poisonous plants. Lymphatics enlarged.
• Manganum - For paralysis first affecting lower limbs. Affects nervous system. Irritation and inflammation of eruptions and small hard ulcers at the corners of the mouth. Necrosis and caries of bone. Tendency to small hard ulcersulceration and eruptions with thickening and infiltration. Chronic eruptions. Psoriasis. Tuberculosis. Laryngitis. Aversion to food, no appetite, nothing will tempt him. Sore to touch and from jarring. Anxiety, fear something bad will happen.
• Crotolus horridus - Blood disease, hemorrhage from orafices, discoloration of skin with swelling. Yellow color of the whole body. Sensitive right half of body. Bloody sweat. Dissecting wounds. Pustular eruptions. Insect stings. Post-vaccination eruptions. Bad effects of vaccination. Lymphangitis and septicæmia. Boils, carbuncles, and eruptions are surrounded by purplish, mottled skin and œdema. Anthrax. Sore sensation relieved by pressure.
• Chelindonium- Not typically a skin eruption remedy. Supports the liver. Obvious yellow skin tone, especially on tips of the fingers yellow and cold, or with nails blue. Veins swollen. Itching as in jaundice. Rheumatic symptoms in upper limbs ; pain in shoulders, arms, tips of fingers, the whole flesh is sore to touch ; sweat without relief ; all symptoms associated with hepatic derangements. Good for lymphatic tissue.
• Staphyloccocus - Isopathic preparation. The wound abscess and persistently draining sinus (a canal or passage leading to an abscess) with bone sequestrations were telltale signs of what we now know as chronic osteomylitis (inflammation of and infection of bone, especially the marrow)
• Calc-sulph - A low potency cell salt for boils or abscesses that are discharging but not healing, or for wounds that have become infected and pus-filled, especially with thick yellow pus that may be lumpy or blood-streaked. If you've tried Hepar sulph, but it does not work, think Calc sulph.
• Staphysagria - Herpes ; itching in the evening ; burn after, cratching. Chronic miliary eruption. Painful swelling of glands.
• Sepia - Skin yellow, like jaundice; chapping of the skin, or cracks may extend deeply into the tissues, and this is aggravated by washing in water; corns with jerking or darting pains; exanthema in general, particularly when it is disposed to crack; dry itch, often finding bad effects where the itch has been suppressed by Mercur. or Sulphur; eruptions peeling off; ulceration of the exanthema; bed sores; brown sphacelus. • Pyrogenium - offensiveness of all the discharges of the body: the breath, sweat, vomit, menstrual, lochia, stools, diarrhea, and other excretions are rendered prominent by this carrion-like smell. The next feature is a great soreness of the body, in consequence of which the bed on which they lie down seems hard and uncomfortable. Cellulitis is an infection involving the skin and areas of tissue below the skin surface. It begins as a small area of redness, pain, swelling, and warmth on the skin. As this area begins to spread, a person may feel feverish and ill. Cellulitis can affect any area of the body, but it's most common on the legs. Clarke lists silica as a specific for this condition, however, a complete search of Materia medica from other homeopaths may lead to another matching remedy.

Styes develop when glands connected to the base of the eyelash become swollen and irritated. A person with a stye will usually notice a red, warm, uncomfortable, and sometimes painful swelling near the edge of the eyelid.

A woman was treated by a homeopath over the course of a number of months to a year and had been given a number of remedies until she was given one that matched her symptoms on all levels, physical, emotional, mental.

This case was taken by Richard Moskowitz, MD

Background information is given about her life history. The woman had a tendency toward forming boils on her skin. However, it was only after the death of her father that she had a severe reaction and formed sensitive boils. This illustrates the fact that the immune system becomes susceptible when undergoing stressful situations.

As a child she often was afflicted with impetigo. At thirteen she contracted severe chicken pox, which lead to resistent Staphylococcal infection.

In college, she took antibiotics whenever she developed eczema and the tendency to form boils. When she was pregnant with her second son harsh crops of pustules broke out involving large areas of her face. But her skin did not flare up really badly until after the death of her father.

Dr. Moskowitz first saw her three years after her son was born. By that time she had developed a huge, painful boil behind her right ear, her eczema drove her to scratch and tear at her legs for brief periods every day, and large crops of new pustules had appeared that stung as intensely as the time she was attacked by a swarm of yellow jackets in her teens.

Initially, she was given a couple of remedies that seemed to ease the symptoms, but the condition never cleared completely. It was only after being given an uncommon remedy, vespo castro, that she improved dramatically.

This case summary illustrates that an individual needs to see a reputable homeopath who can assess the situation and analyse the symptoms with the modern computer programs; and even then, it takes time to find the correct remedy.

Impetigo is a contagious infection of the skin caused by staphylococcal and streptococcal bacteria that begins with small blisters or pimples, which then form honey-yellow-brown scabs or crusts. If the skin becomes red, swollen or hot and you have a fever, indicating infection, see a doctor immediately.

This disease usually occurs in young children, but it can sometimes affect teens and adults where the face, hands and/or feet are infected. The blisters may itch and can be spread to other parts of the body by scratching.
