Introduction

Can I use homeopathy for my pets?

For acute self limited problems like a scratches, bumps or bruises you may be able to find a homeopathic remedy to quickly resolve the injury. For more chronic conditions it is best to consult a professional homeopathic veterinarian.

The basic premise for selecting a remedy is the same for all organisms, whether it be humans, animals or plants. Yes, there are scientists and agronomists using homeopathy with agricultural and ornamental plants. The difference is that with humans we can find out directly from them through conversation what causes them the most pain as they describe the problem. We can come to a deep acting remedy through an interview process.

With animals and young children the prescriber must be very observant noticing modalities of what makes the pet feel better or worse. Also take note of what generalities like weather or eating patterns effect the condition and temperament. These factors will help guide you to finding a matching remedy pattern using a simplified materia medica and repertory from a basic book home healthcare homeopathy book. Just adapt the symptoms from humans to pets.

PRINCIPLES of HOMEOPATHY

THE LAW OF SIMILARS When there is a disorder or ‘dis-ease’ in the organism the homeopath observes and relates a common energy pattern to the symptoms and expression of the patient. Usually in an acute situation, we see the acurately chosen remedy act quickly. In a chronic condition the remedy may take some time to act. Dr. Scholten recently said, “I trust the Law of Similars. When it is the right remedy, I wait less and less.” He meant that he could tell quite quickly if he chose a matching energy pattern.

If there is no improvement, do not worry, because homeopathic remedies do no harm. Move to the next most ‘similar’ remedy.

PRINCIPLES OF HOMEOPATHY

THE LAW OF THE MINIMUM DOSE has been proven over time to be true. In this case ‘less is more.’ One small dose can stimulate the body’s own immune system to clear the problem. Today, many homeopaths use the ‘water method’ and this works well for pets. By placing the remedy pellet into water the pet can drink as much as he or she feels necessary. They have that sixth sense. Normally, we only repeat the dose if the remedy worked initially, but there is a relapse. Often the remedy is given until full recovery is reached or the remedy is changed to cover some lingering symptom. It is always best to wait and see.

THE HEALING EFFECT

AGGRAVATIONS An aggravation occurs when the remedy is correctly selected. The initial physical reaction is for the body to slightly worsen for a short time. This may be followed by a need for complete rest. Then you will see improvement. The aggravation is a good sign and the resting period may be a few days to a week or more in a deeply chronic case. Notice the mood of your pet. If s/he appears calm and peaceful then it is the road to healing. You should soon see a more lively pet. If not, call a professional to get help.

Homeopathy Dosage Directions

There are particular remedies that suit different animals or are found to be more commonly used in certain illnesses and situations. There is no difference in the dosage amount given between humans and animals.

POTENCY Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. When treating yourself or your pet, you can find low potency pellet vials (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) at the local health food store. The instructions on the bottle usually list one type of illness that it can be used for and to take 3 pellets under the tongue 3 times per day. Remember that it is best to adhere to the law of ‘minimum dose.’  If you see improvement, it may not be necessary to repeat the remedy.

Since we are applying treatment to a pet, it may be easier to give the water dose by dropping 1-3 pellets into the water dish or giving by eye-dropper or spray bottle. If improvement is seen to stop, after is was working, then another dose may be administered. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Use judgment in re-dosing at greater intervals as the condition improves. For emergency use, give every 10-15 minutes. Then taper off to every few hours, then once a day.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

STORIES:

If you have any healing pet stories please post so others can see the benefits of homeopathy at home.

Excerpt from Interview with Melissa:

Soon after I had my son, Alex, and was doing research on health. I was a new mother not particularly interested in medicine per se, and especially not the responsibility of treating my newborn child if he got sick. There was a lot of controversy about vaccinations and I wanted to be sure to be safe and know what I should do to keep my son well.

Soon after I went to a lecture on homeopathy given by homeopath Robert Stuart. I was a total convert. I came to the lecture convinced the world was one way, and that cause and effect dominated mostly. Robert, however, was speaking about infinitesimal substances, not even measurable, saying that they will cure disease when prescribed according to the "law of similars". He was talking about the realm of energy…saying things like ‘the body and mind are connected’. And other strange ideas like a person who feels like a king though dressed in rags might need Sulphur for his skin problems. This talk really caught my attention.

Sorry, I do not have any homeopathic pet stories, but I do have a question. What to give for colds in cats. I almost killed my cat the other day while trying to give her a drop of afrin n her nose to help her reath. I accidentally gave her too much and she began to foam at the mouth and I immediately gave her some charcoal in a shrynge by mouth. She came out of it, but she is still stuffy. She isn't near as stuffed as when I had to grab her and bring her inside--she was barely breathing. She is an outdoor cat and another cat--which will not be able to be brought in and put in a crate-- is sick too. I have her in a dog crate by herself until she is better or at least well enough to go back outside.

Is there anything that I can do for the cat that is sick outside, at least to build his immune system up?

Homeopathy can work very well for colds--both pets and people! I would recommend you get a good homeopathic kit and a book to get you started. Mary Aspinwall has one of the best at www.Homeopathyworld.com:

I am planning to do a Homeopathy Basic Course for Treating Pets early next year...I have one for people that has been a great success.

I hope this information about treating your cat was helpful.

My dog Maggie was completed paralyzed from Lyme Disease and after one dose of her constitutional remedy she was up and running again after 15 minutes. Truly miraculous. She had a relapse a year later and repeated her remedy and again she has been doing great!
