Part 2: Healing Your Pets

PART ONE

The first article of this series introduced the basic principles of homeopathy and explained how to observe your pet and select acute remedies for self limiting condtitions.

PART TWO

Let us review that basic precept that homeopathy differs from conventional medicine. Homeopathy is holistic and stimulates the body's own immune system to heal all levels, not only physical, but also emotional, mental and spiritual.

Typically, conventional medicine delivers a drug for one area of the body, but this does not address the underlying depression, grief, fears, or other emotional issues along with the pains.

Connection of Spirit and Body

Dr. Mehmet Oz includes Homeopathy in the healing modalities he recommends for his patients, along with yoga and meditation. We can utilize homeopathy for our pets. Pets are people too!

Interview with Dr. Mehmet Oz, Professor and Vice Chairman of Surgery at Columbia University in New York City, Director of the Cardiovascular Institute, and Founder and Director for the Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Oz is a widely published author, including the award-winning Healing from the Heart and two best-selling books, YOU: The Owner’s Manual and YOU: The Smart Patient. He has written numerous articles for consumer and medical publications, including Newsweek, O, The Oprah Magazine, and The New England Journal of Medicine, and has a bi-monthly column in Esquire magazine. He is also a regular contributor to The Oprah Winfrey Show. Recorded by APM: Speaking of Faith with Krista Tippett

Questions about the use of Antibiotics

Increasing concern over the use of antibiotics and other anti microbial products in farming industry and our own health care system makes us question our approach to healing. EU scientists and the Commission have recommended reduction in the use of antibiotics and other anti microbial products. Antibiotic resistence has led to less effective treatment of diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosis and salmonella infections.

Environmental and animal concern organizations have petitioned for less antibiotic and drug use in growing our foods, in human and veterinary medicine. These drugs can be more effective when used only when absolutely necessary, then the body does not develop resistent strains. Since the 1970s, the EU Commission has banned more than 20 antibiotics from use in animal husbandry.

An increasing number of organic farmers are using homeopathic remedies instead of conventional drugs to treat their animals. ECCH believes that increasing homeopathic treatment of animals would result in reduced need for antibiotic use and anti-microbial products while maintaining and improving the health of these animals.

Questions about Vaccination

Veterinarians are beginning to recognize that repeated vaccination for animal diseases, like canine distemper, that were once self limiting have transformed these diseases into chronic conditions that have lingering effects.

Thomas S. Heemstra has written the book Anthrax a Deadly Shot in the Dark: Unmasking the Truth Behind a Hazardous Vaccine

Reader comment: Thomas S. Heemstra (LTC,INANG,retired), did what he was trained to do...used his integrity to take care of those under his command. His intensive research on the military's Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program (AVIP) results in termination of his military career, not in his concern for the truth. . .

Vaccines Cancer and Leukemia

Is there a link between vaccines and cancer?

According to a Canadian study presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy and Asthma in 1998, the idea that vaccines and antibiotics produce many adverse reactions in children. We could extrapolate that the yearly pet vaccines would have similar outcomes. Sandra K. Knowles and her colleagues at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto reviewed Canadian data on more than 1,500 cases of drug reactions between 1985 and 1995. The antibiotics amoxicillan and ampicillin accounted for 24 per cent of total adverse reactions, with vaccines coming in second at 19 per cent.

Article about Vaccinations: Puppy Shots: Vaccination Issues for Breeders by Christie Keith informs you of research, opinions, and her personal refelections that might be useful to you in determining a disease prevention program for your pet.

Christine Agro asks us to Imagine if every time you went to the doctor you were given vaccinations that you don’t need. What if these vaccinations offer no benefit but only side effects? What if these injections were given with the owners receiving information about the risks? How many people would research alternative approaches? Of course, there are community and state laws to contend with when owning a pet.

Veterinarian Dr. James Busby, author of “How To Afford Veterinary Care Without Mortgaging the Kids”, questions the motivations of his profession in continuing the practice of routine vaccinations without caution of the risks.

Are Canine Distemper, Rabies, Feline Panleukopenia Vaccines Effective?

Dr. Pitcairn, a classical homeopathic veterinarian, found that correctly chosen remedies stopped acting or didn’t work until he gave a remedy to address the impact of vaccination.

The most widely used remedies are Thuja (Arbor vitae tree), Sulphur (mineral) and Silica (silicon dioxide or quartz). Other remedies include Mezereum, Malandrinum (nosode of horse’s heel), Sarsaparilla (Spurge olive), and Carcinosin (nosode of cancer cells).

Barbara Loe Fischer

Barbara Loe Fisher, Co-founder & President of the National Vaccine Information Center, gave an Oral Presentation on September 10, 2003 to the Subcommittee on Human Rights and Wellness before the U.S. House Government Reform Committee and U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. entitled “The SV40 Virus: Has Tainted Polio Vaccine Caused An Increase in Cancer?”

It is recommended reading that will open your eyes to the dangers of vaccination if you haven't already been aware of this fact. If this applies to humans, how much more so to our pets that receive annual booster shots.

You can visit Stand Up and Be Counted to vote for their motto: No Forced Vaccination. Not in America.

Barbara Fisher states, "In another fit of pique aimed at the growing number of vaccine-educated parents questioning pediatricians about the safety of vaccines, the largest private medical organization representing medical doctors treating children - the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) - recently announced to its membership that it will fight doubting parents in their offices, in the media, on the internet and through a partnership with other wealthy and powerful organizations funded by a pharmaceutical industry committed to doing the same thing.

On May 30, the AAP leadership reports that it met with the leaders of 15 allied organizations in Elk Grove, Illinois to discuss the growing refusal of parents to vaccinate their children according to recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and AAP. A recent letter to AAP members stated: “The group agreed that recent attacks on vaccines have left parents confused. The rates of exemptions are climbing, and the protection of communities from vaccine preventable diseases is in jeopardy. Participants identified several factors that promote anti-vaccine information:

  • Parent-to-parent spread of myths,
  • A public that does not understand the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases,
  • Internet and media exposure that is not balanced,
  • Decreased trust in the government and health care providers,
  • Slow response to negative news coverage, and
  • Increasing calls for philosophical exemptions.

The group recognized strategies that have worked in the past to address these drivers, agreed to jointly promote the positive value of vaccines, and will come together again in July to develop a cohesive message for dissemination. This message will be disseminated in mainstream media, through professional organizations, and via Internet tools. Materials are expected to be available by fall 2008. The group will formally be known as the Immunization Alliance."
