Homeschooling Costs
53The Cost of Homeschooling
It is understandable to be concerned about homeschooling costs. However, you should know that the amount of money you spend really does depend upon your household.
Of course, a lot of people will try to tell you that homeschooling is expensive. They want you to believe that you are going to pay more money to homeschool your child than you would pay to send your child to public school. In their minds, a good homeschool education cannot be had for less than what you would pay between $2,000 and $10,000 per child.
Fortunately, this is not true. You CAN homeschool your child with very little cost to you. This is a good thing since homeschooling requires that 1 parent does not work outside of the home. Therefore, some sacrifices are going to have to be made if your family is use to living off of 2 incomes. This can be an even bigger problem if you are a single parent.
There are some things that you are going to have to purchase for your homeschool though. These items include such things as paper, erasers, pens and pencils. You are also going to have to either buy or acquire textbooks but these do not have to cost a lot of money. You can get most of the things that you need out of your library and that which you cannot get you can purchase these second hand.
Another inexpensive option is to send your child to an online public school. These programs usually provide everything that your student needs, including paper, pens and pencils, workbooks, microscopes and computers. Oftentimes you are limited to a set amount per school term and anything else that you will want to use you will have to pay for.
Now, if you are going to invest in a boxed program you will be spending a great deal of money. For instance, Calvert will cost you $450 for the student's materials alone and then you will have to pay $220 for the teaching materials. A Beka is another commonly used program. Here, you can buy individual books that range in price from $.75 to $16. However, a full year of curriculum is going to cost you at least $450.
It cannot easily be predicted just how much those parents who choose to unschool will pay but it can range from $300 to $1,000. Another thing that cannot be calculated is the price for such things as dance classes, art classes, etc. However, all parents are going to be faced with this bill so it is unfair to discuss this as a price that is paid for homeschooling.
Obviously, these are just some of the costs that are associated with homeschooling. As you can see, homeschooling can cost as much or as little as you want to spend. The "price tag" does not make homeschooling any less of a serious commitment though. It just depends upon the type of schooling you want to do. This is something well worth considering before you get started though.
