Spelling Activities

Here is a step by step guide to help improve your child's spelling.

It is called LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK.

You need a folder with 2 sheets of paper. The sheet on the left of the folder is for you to write the words you want your child to learn. The sheet on the right is for the child to practice their words. Here is how to do it.

1. LOOK: The child looks at the word.

2. SAY: The child says the word and spells it out loud.

3. COVER: The child covers the word with a piece of paper so they can't see it.

4. WRITE: The child writes the word on their piece of paper.

5. CHECK: Did the child spell it correctly? Yes, move onto the next word. No, put a tick on any letters they did get correct then start the process again until they have the word correct.

Helpful Hints:

Teaching phonics is very important and is the key strategy we use when reading. Point out to your child: any letter patterns, for example: ing, ion, etc. sounds they know, single letters, or blends, sh, th, ch, st, etc. double letters, ll, tt, ee, etc.

Words to use for weekly spelling can be from a list you have, from a topic you are covering or from the child's own writing.

Happy Spelling!!!
