Home Tips
A/C & Cooling: Depending upon where you live and how your house was built, your home may have any of several different types of home climate systems. Houses may be cooled by central air conditioning, room air conditioners, heat pumps, or a relatively old-fashioned way--with ceiling fans. And in some areas where too much or too little humidity is a problem, the interior air is brought into balance with the help of humidifiers or dehumidifiers. A good barrier of insulation helps maintain your home's energy.
Two important facts about heat movement: First, heat seeks a balance. Warm air always moves from a warm place to a colder one and vice versa; the greater the difference, the faster the flow of heat. Second, heated air rises. Unless it's stirred up, the air in a room tends to stratify--warm air gathers near the ceiling and cool air moves toward the floor. helps to keep hard-won heated or cooled air inside your home, where it belongs.
Air & Water Quality
When it comes to the elements that make a house safe and comfortable, none are as important as air and water. Our bodies demand air that is clean and free of pollutants and allergens. And we need water that doesn't contain lead or other toxins.
Beyond safety, quality is important. Water that is full of minerals (hard water) can cause many problems, from rashes to pipes that are crammed with deposits. Room air that is too high or low in humidity can be uncomfortable or, worse, damage your home's structure.
Appliances
Appliances help us with almost every type of chore, from cooking food to washing clothes, conditioning the air, and heating our water. They are essential to every house. When we remodel or improve our homes, appliances are often the big-ticket items. Considering their importance and expens-and the fact that we will be using them for many years--it only makes sense to choose appliances carefully and thoughtfully.
Basement, Attic & Loft
When you are remodeling, unfinished areas in a house frequently offer the most cost-effective opportunity for gaining usable space. If your home has a basement or attic that has enough floor area and headroom, you might be able to convert that area to usable living space relatively affordably because it has an existing floor, roof, and/or walls. Of course, significant changes may be required; for example, an attic floor may need reinforcement. Or you may need to provide access via a new staircase.
Bathrooms
Today's bathrooms have become beautiful, efficient, luxurious spaces that are key to the comfort, style, and value of our homes. When it comes to identifying the areas of homes that warrant the cost of remodeling or improvement, bathrooms often top the list. Not only does a newly improved bathroom add immeasurably to the enjoyment of a home, but it offers one of the best returns on investment dollars.
Cabinets & Countertops
Cabinets and countertops work together in kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, and similar spaces to provide essential storage and convenient, durable work surfaces. Some are refined, traditional, and downright expensive; others are sleek, contemporary, and designed for function. Your options are almost endless.
Car, Garage & Shop
Give proper care and attention to this part of the house.
Childproofing Your Home
Providing a healthy physical environment for your baby means more than safety gates and cuddly toys. In fact, it begins from the moment of conception.
Making your home safe for baby begins by making it healthy and safe for you. It means ensuring that no harmful microscopic particles or gases are contaminating the air in your home. It means being prepared to cope with unexpected disasters in the world outside your front door. And it means adapting various systems or rooms in your home to create an environment that is user-friendly and safe for people of all abilities and ages.
Closets & Storage
Do you have more "stuff" than you know what to do with? If your closets are packed, your drawers are stuffed, and your cabinets are bulging, maybe it's time to consider improving the storage in and around your home. Efficient, effective storage helps you get organized and stay organized. It helps you eliminate clutter and makes it much easier to find things when you need them. And it aids you in taking advantage of every square inch of available storage space.
Decorating & Furnishing
Decorating or redecorating your home is a new beginning. It offers an opportunity to create an environment that represents who you are, what you care about, and your sense of style.
Some parts of the process are easy, such as painting, wallpapering, and similar tasks. The decisions are the hard part. Thousands of paint colors, wallpaper patterns, faux finishes: Sorting through the options and making the right choices can be overwhelming.
Design, Plan, Build
Many different types of tradespeople specialize in working on various house components or various aspects of the design and building process. That's why finding the right people to help with your home improvement projects or home repairs is key to getting a quality job and good price.
Equally important is meticulous planning, whether you're making bookshelves or building a new house.
Doors
We pass through doors every day; in, out, and throughout our homes. They allow us free passage or, if we need, they can be closed for solitude or security. Doors come in many shapes, sizes, and materials, and operate in a multitude of ways. Choose the doors wisely.
Electrical & Lighting
Give proper attention to the power supply and lighting to make your life comfortable.
Floors & Stairs
Flooring sets the tone for the look and feel of a room. But beyond appearance, the choice of a certain flooring material should be based on how a room is used. If you must walk through a room from the front door to get to the rest of the house, the flooring in that room should stand up to heavy foot traffic, including the possibility of tracked-in mud. If you like to cook elaborate meals, the kitchen's flooring should be kind to your feet. In this section you will find helpful information and guidance on not just how to choose flooring materials but also on how to install the flooring you do select.
Heating & Fireplaces
Depending upon where you live and how your house was built, your home may have any of several types of heating systems that help you to enjoy your interior spaces year round. Forced-air and gravity furnaces power ducted central systems, while electricity, water, or steam charge up radiant heating units. And fireplaces and pellet stoves--which create heat by burning pellets made of recycled sawdust, wood shavings, or other biomass waste materials--can be significant sources of supplemental heat.
Whenever you are dealing with home climate systems, remember that heat rises and will move from a warm place to a colder place. The greater the temperature difference, the faster the movement.
Kitchens
"Home is where the hearth is." What this saying basically comes down to is that a dwelling is not a home without a kitchen. Since prehistoric times, dwellings were literally built around the hearth--the cooking and heating center of the home.
Nowadays, the kitchen is where meals are prepared, snacks are sneaked, families come together, and homework and other projects are tackled. The "hearth" is still the "heart" of the home.
Safe & Secure Home
Of all the purposes that a home serves, providing safety and security are the most important. Your house may be beautifully designed, furnished, and finished, but if your family isn't safe within its walls, this is like icing on a cardboard cake. Be safe.
