WALLPAPER: Modern Design Trends

Wallpaper is making a comeback.

I know what you're thinking: "WALLpaper? - How gauche". But this isn't your mama's wallpaper. There's not a single purple fleur-des-lis or red rooster to be found anywhere.

Modern consumers in both private and business sectors had a love affair with plain white walls (Ivory, Eggshell, Parchment, Cream - the list is endless) until they started looking into organic colors reflecting nature, and which had names like Wheat, Asparagus, Sage and Chrysanthemum.

To paint or not to paint?

When remodeling your home or office, most people opt for a fresh coat pf paint. Some people view wallpaper as a relic from the past, recalling Grandma's parlor with giant roses or gold scrolls all over the place. Modern decorators are taking another look at wallpaper, and applying innovative changes to it.

Even a fresh coat of designer paint, while a great accent for your home, won't satisfy people's desire to be different. In fact, people don't just want 'different' anymore. They want a WOW factor for their homes and offices. And they want to do it with the least amount of work as possible.

Two kinds of wallpaper that bring it are lighted wallpaper and digital wallpaper.

Neither of these innovative design trends are wallpaper at all, and no paint scrapers, wallpaper steamers, putty knives, or wallpaper paste are needed.

Lighted Wallpaper

Dutch designer Jonas Samson has created lighted wallpaper with the intent to replace the need for most light fixtures. Hundreds of tiny LED lights are embedded into the wall and controlled by a light switch.

Like Christmas lights, they can be set to a steady twinkle, or set to twinkle randomly around the walls, depending on the affect you want.

The wallpaper makes a powerful design statement, and can serve as art for your home or office, which means you won't have to buy any art to hang on your walls.

This wallpaper can emit enough light to illuminate any room, although you might still need a reading lamp when you curl up in your armchair to read the New York Times.

Design engineers at Strukt Design Studio in Vienna have really brought it with their latest creation: Digiital Wallpaper.

What Is Digital Wallpaper?

Digital wallpaper is wallpaper that moves.

It lights up.

It makes a statement.

When people walk into your home or office, they won't believe their eyes. And neither will you.

Interior designers used computer animation tools to form random lighting patterns and combined them with video projectors strategically placed around the walls to create a stunning digital wallpaper.

After measuring the dimensions of the wall and seeing what they have to work with (in this case, horizontally-striped walls), designers programmed attractive lighting patterns and colors into a software program, then uploaded the program into the projectors. The images automatically travel along the length of the walls (including exciting scenes from Pac-Man) to the delight and amusement of the building's inhabitants.

Will these two wallpaper trends for home or office interiors catch on? They are already being showcased at design expos in Europe, and no doubt will capture the interest of American designers, homeowners and corporations who want something innovative and unique.

I'm a big wallpaper fan, even though I don't have any wallpaper in my home - I've always wanted it. I must say, though, that I have never seen or heard of the wallpaper you describe here. Not my taste, but very cool indeed!
