Honeycomb Blinds – Deceptively Strong
75Many people, when considering what style of blinds will go well in their home, will gloss over honeycomb blinds without giving them a great deal of thought. The main reason for this is because they are perceived as being of a lesser robustness than other blind solutions. It's true, these blinds are made of paper, but they are specifically designed to withstand a fair amount of abuse, and will last, in some cases, even longer than your more traditional material or PVC blinds.
The paper that honeycomb blinds are made of is generally a special type of paper product that has been treated in order for it to withstand the harsh elements that it is subjected to when hung on a window. Some salespeople will tell you that their honeycomb blinds have a "memory". Obviously, this is a load of baloney, but what they are actually trying to say is that the blind will go back to its original form. Other retailers will call this "crumple proofing", both these terms mean the same thing, which is that if the blinds are inadvertently squashed out of shape, folding them up for an hour or so should make them revert back to their original shape and form. So as you can see, honeycomb blinds are actually more dependable than other styles of blinds in some ways.
One of the biggest selling features of honeycomb blinds is its amazing ability to insulate. You would think that the opposite would be true, and that cold night air would travel straight through such a thin material, making your house unliveable. This couldn't be further from the truth; the insulating power of these blinds is very deceptive. The secret is in the cells of the honeycomb. Each cell stores a pocket of air, which acts as an incredibly strong barrier against the elements.
What room is best suited for honeycomb blinds? Well, pretty much any room, really. People have been using this style of blinds in bedrooms, lounge rooms and kitchens, all to great effect. If you are considering getting some for your bathroom, then you are going to have to be careful in the material that you choose. Make sure you tell the retailer that you are purchasing from that these blinds will be installed in a moist environment, as there are specifically treated materials out there that you can use in these situations.
Honeycomb Window Blinds and the Filtering of Light
One thing that you will need to keep in mind when deciding on which honeycomb blinds are right for your situation is something I like to call the light factor. Some rooms naturally lend themselves to having filtered light in them, whereas others (particularly the living room) are going to need a much more thorough blockage of light. Honeycombs can provide both solutions, but a different style is needed for each. As mentioned previously, the honeycomb blind is based around a cell structure. The lightest (and least expensive) style of honeycomb blind has one row of cells. For a more thorough blocking out of light, you can get honeycomb cellular blinds that have up to three cells thick. This will also provide with greater insulation properties as well.
Finally, I just wanted to warn you that honeycomb blinds are not always the right way to go. It will really depend on your own personal preference most of the time, and there are some styles of homes that this type of blind is just not suited to. These blinds are also not designed to withstand outdoor use, so would not be suitable as outdoor blinds on patios or verandas. They are, however, extremely cheap, so you could always pick up a couple and try them out. If they don't suit your current situation you should have no trouble selling them on to someone else.

Hey Recovery Guy: Thanks for visiting my hub. Yes, you can actually get blackout honeycomb blinds that do a great job of blocking out all the light from your room. What the manufacturers usually do is double (or in some case even triple) the layers of cells, providing you with complete privacy, and still benefiting from the lightweight nature of these blinds.
Wow I love these honeycomb blinds, they would be perfect for a conservatory. I have never seen them here in the UK and I wonder if they are available here?
