Hoodia Gordonii Side Effects

What is Hoodia?
Hoodia Gordonii is a cactus that grows in the Kalahari desert in South Africa and know where else. There are many different kinds of Hoodia but Hoodia Gordonii is exclusive to the South African desert. I am making this distinction because there are a lot of people selling Hoodia products that are from Mexico and China.
They are not Hoodia Gordonii and they do not have the same appetite suppressing properties and effects as the original. The effect that I am talking about is the ability to make the human brain think that there is a high level of sugar in the blood which makes you feel like you are full. Basically, it is an appetite suppressant and is also known to suppress thirst as well.
Taking Hoodia will not make you lose weight. It is not a fat blocker and it will not speed up your metabolism or magically burn fat. It will simply keep you from feeling hungry. If you are the kind of person who eats because of depression, anxiety, or boredom, than Hoodia Gordonii is not going to help you one bit.
Hoodia Is Not A Miracle Diet Pill, Only An Appetite Suppressant
Side Effects Of Hoodia Gordonii
Since Hoodia's overnight popularity has caused a virtual Hoodia gold rush, thousands of unscrupulous marketers are making the claim that Hoodia Gordonii is totally void of any side effects. The truth of the matter is that there are no published studies as to the long term effects of Hoodia Gordonii. Hoodia has only been in North America since 2004.
You will see a lot of advertisements that talk about how the Bushmen have been using Hoodia for thousands of years with no ill effects. While this may be true, the Bushman of South Africa are probably not taking any medications for their anxiety attacks or to regulate their blood pressure.
Hoodia Gordonii has not been approved by the FDA. I am currently taking Hoodia and I did a lot of research before I began. The only thing that I could find that even resembled an official study was a letter written to the New York Times by a former researcher of Hoodia at Pfizer. Pfizer had licensed the rights to develop Hoodia but later returned those rights to Phytopharm.
In the letter, Dr. Jasjit S. Bindra stated that although the active ingredient, P57, did appear to suppress appetite, there were indications of unwanted effects on the liver that were caused by other parts of the plant that could not easily be separated from the P57.
He went on to make the comment, "Clearly, Hoodia has a long way to go before it can earn approval from the Food and Drug Administration. Until safer formulations are developed, dieters should be wary of using it."
Phytopharm is now working with Unilever, who are the makers of Slimfast. Hopefully they will publish some official findings and remove some of the mystery surrounding Hoodia. Until then, I will share the results of my research and personal experience. Here are some known side effects and things to watch out for:
- If you are taking any kind of medication, you should consult your physician before taking Hoodia. No studies have been done to determine how Hoodia will react with other drugs.
- Be cautious if you have allergies. Hoodia is an herb and could cause allergic reactions.
- Hoodia may couse you to not eat enough. Do not take Hoodia if you have an eating disorder or are under weight.
- Eating small snacks at regular intervals is a vital part of speeding up your metabolism. You may have to set reminders to make yourself eat when taking Hoodia.
- Hoodia also curbs your thirst. You will also have to force yourself to drink a lot of water. This is another key factor in a successful weight loss program.
- It is believed that Hoodia works by tricking the brain into believing that their are elevated sugar levels in the bloodstream. If you are diabetic, consult your doctor before using Hoodia.
- Hoodia has somewhat of a natural feel-good aphrodisiac quality about it. You will notice an increased libido. My wife and I have both noticed this first hand.
- As with any herb or drug, pregnant or lactating women should consult their physician before using Hoodia and the same goes for children.
- The San Bushmen claim that they use Hoodia to treat diabetes and hypertension. They also say it is good for hangovers and upset stomach's but there are no official studies to prove if there is any truth to this.
Warning - Don't Get Hoodia Winked!
Pure Hoodia Gordonii
If you decide to give Hoodia Gordonii a try. Please be careful and do your research. A recent study showed that 80% of the Hoodia being sold is counterfeit. The plant takes 5 to 7 years to mature and only comes from the South African desert. Therefore it is very rare. There is no way that current Hoodia production can meet the demand that exists right now.
The plant is actually listed on the endangered species list and the South African government has implemented strict controls on the exportation and cultivation of this herb. They have recently made allotments for some Hoodia farms but it will be years before these plants are ready. Until then make sure you are getting the real McCoy.
You will read a lot of conflicting reports saying that Hoodia doesn't work. Chances are that these people did not have a product that was 100% pure, if it was even Hoodia Gordonii at all.I have done extensive research on what criteria you should use to find pure Hoodia Gordonii and what to avoid like the plague. - Children
Although preventative health care is raging in America today, 50% of American adults are overweight. 17% of adults are obese. Although these statistics are staggering and should definitely attract our concern, I would point you to an even greater cloud on the horizon. In fact, it's darkening and coming our way at 100 miles per hour. What is this Dark Cloud on the Horizon? The rising generation learns from what we say, but most importantly what we do. Actions speak louder than words. Only 6% of children were overweight twenty years ago, around 1990. Today, 33.3% of children are overweight; an increasing number of them are sadly obese. What Has Happened? There are many factors, so we'll look at some of the major and most common issues our children face today: 1. Highly Processed Foods, including TV dinners, chips, sodas, cookies, crackers, cheez-its, etc. Not only do these foods provide zippo nutrition to the body, but they tax the immune system with preservatives and other chemicals. Why do they taste so good? It's all fake flavorings that stimulate your brain to keep asking for MORE. Because processed foods don't provide your body with nutrients, your immune system believes you are still hungry and so you eat more. This begins a vicious cycle that is usually unbroken, causing serious weight gain. 2. Inactivity–GameBoy, Cell Phones, Chat, Facebook, TV/Movies, Computer Surfing, etc. Most kids are so busy with there electronics that they spend the majority of there free time sitting. Anyone gets overweight if they don't get any exercise, especially when they are children. Kids should be using and developing their bodies when they are young, to make it easier to stay fit as adults. 3. Long School Hours–Okay, you may laugh, but I'm serious. Most children spend at least eight hours in school, including riding the bus (and they usually don't walk more than ten steps to the bus pick up nowadays!). What Can You Do? 1. Have your child exercise for at least 30 minutes each day. This could be playing in the backyard with you, gym equipment, jogging/running, swimming, walking or an organized sport. If your child is resisting exercise, I would enroll them in a sport at school that forces them to do heavy exercise often. In the summer, find them a community team to play on. 2. Get rid of the processed snack food! Instead, have whole grain baked breads, fresh fruit and other healthy snacks for your kids when they get home from school. Cook good, wholesome food for their meals. If necessary, declare Saturday cooking day and freeze the next week's meals. Recruit your kids help with the cooking if they are old enough. Kids need to learn responsibility and the earlier the better. 3. Limit the computer, TV and other electronic games to a minimum. Say maybe 30 minutes each day–absolutely no more. It may be hard, but it'll be worth your kid's health. Read more on Children… - 8 months ago

Tell Me What You Think About Hoodia
You are correct. You burn more than you take in. Hoodia Gordonii is not a "miracle diet" pill, but it will curb your appetite. I know because I have used it. If you are the type of person who eats because they are stressed or depressed than it will not do you any good. You are going to eat regardless if you feel hungry or not.
When I began my weight loss program, portion control was a big part of my strategy. Hoodii really helped me in the beginning because I was used to eating these huge meals. I was able to eat small meals and not feel like I was starving an hour later.
Very best of luck with your weight loss.
Hi, I have been using Hoodia for a few months now and it has definitely helped me reduce my snacking, and concentrate on losing weight properly - by healthy eating and through exercise. Not having to worry about where the next chocolate bar is going to fit into my day is a god send.

Hi Nancy,
It just goes to show that if you have the real thing it does in fact work. The problem is that there are a lot of frauds out there. Be careful. What brand are you using. When I was taking it I used Desert Burn.
There are very few hoodia side effects of note, it does suppress your appetite too.

I'm very suspicious of all "miracle diet" pills. I think the basics are still true - eat fewer calories than you expend.
