You're Not Alone
Is your home piling up with crocheted afghans, slippers, sweaters and doilies which you don't know what to do with anymore? The thought of quitting has crossed your mind more than once but you just can't get yourself to let go of those hooks and yarn.
The truth is you're entangled and hooked on crochet. The harder you try to untangle yourself the more entangled you become.
This hub is to let you know that you're not alone. There are many others who suffer the same symptoms as you do, and there is help. As of yet there is no cure, once you're hooked, you're hooked for life. But there is help which will relieve the symptom of guilt for having yarn and projects lying around in different areas of the house.
It's quite alright to have a stash in the living room for when you have company or when your family is watching T.V.
You definitely need the stash which you have in the kitchen to keep you occupied when waiting for the chocolate chip cookies.
And likewise the stash in the laundry room, or the one in front of your computer, you need them in case you get bored.
Last but not least, you need not be ashamed of the stash you keep under your bed. Studies have shown that when you cannot sleep at night the best thing to do is keep busy with a leisure activity.
Just think, if you weren't crocheting while everyone else is watching T.V., or while waiting for the cookies, laundry or the computer, what would you be doing? Most likely you would sit there and think about crocheting and accomplish nothing. So you see, it really is okay.
Next there's the symptom of guilt for spending all the money on crochet books, yarns, and crochet hooks. Millions of thoughts come into your head of what you could have done with the money instead of spending it so selfishly on yarn.
Then when the project is finished the evidence of your seemingly selfish act remains to be seen by everyone who enters your home. The compliments are enough to make you gloat with pride and your mind starts dreaming of the next project.
By the time the joy and pride wears off from the previous project, you've already purchased the yarn and pattern for your next project; and as hard as you try to keep the door shut, guilt creeps in regardless.

The Remedies
While there is no cure for the underlying problem there is relief for the symptom. You can donate your finished items to charity to help justify you spending the money because you're contributing the finished item to a worthy cause. Here is a site with a list of charity organizations which will accept your finished crocheted items.
If you find that donating to charity becomes too costly, you can sell your items online or at craft fairs and make money by doing what you love. There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting paid to have fun. Here's a site which will explain the basics on how and where to sell your crafts online.
So if you're hooked on crochet, invite your friends over for a leisure crochet party anytime you may feel the urge to do so. With these two remedies you shouldn't have to worry about the symptoms of guilt bothering you ever again!

Hi Helen- I have about 30 skeins of yarn stashed in my closets, left over from previous projects. Recently I decided I'd start making scarves with the leftovers and donate them to charity. Thanks for the link to charities that accept crocheted items! It's just what I was looking for. Great hub :)
