Time -Piece Keepers

Time is a moment that we seek and plan for fun and interesting activities, which we may schedule ahead of the end of our work day. Do you refer to your watch?

A simple looking accessory which many of us cannot do without and purchase to suit our fashion and/or personal style. I try to buy a watch that will pass through casual and formal occasions and do my best to avoid rough treatment throughout the day. One serious thump to the watch can break a delicate inner component!

Time was based on the measurement and observation of our seasons cycles and movement of celestial bodies in the sky. Other early methods used were by watching shadows cast by a pole in the ground or other upright object. A shadow clock and the sundial were one of the first devices that were used. Discovery and use of other methods and creation of time pieces and devices followed such as the hourglass, clepsydra, clock and watch.

The skilled Horologist will have the skills and knowledge in the science and art of measuring time, repair, and preservation of the technology in the construction of these complex instruments such as clocks, watches and even chronometers. Every model has many different mechanisms. I prefer the ones with the tiny gears and springs and require winding up even if I have to visit my local watch repair store once a year to ensure accuracy and a cleaning.

The repair of these mechanisms require knowing how to study, identify, disassemble the miniature mechanisms carefully and patiently repair before reassembly. In addition, he or she must be able to get a watch to run and keep good time. It may take several hours of adjustment to get the watch to keep good time. This skill is useful for watches that still have moving mechanisms- not for most digital watches and lower prices but they do know these inner components as well. Atomic clocks are the most accurate time keepers.

The basic tools used for repairs are a good lamp, a good work area and bench, loupes for magnification, tweezers, screwdrivers, truing caliper, timing machine, cleaning solvents, oil, and the list will go on as there are many specialized tools that are required for watch repair for the many different models and mechanisms that exist. It is a ever evolving skill since new technology is discovered and introduced almost every new and past year.

Graduates from a college of Horology will have the abilities of a skilled jeweler. This will give them the qualifications for watch repair, clock repair, jewelry repair, engraving, restoration, preservation for both public, corporate, and private or museum collections of fine timepieces. Collectors of antique time pieces require the skills of the skilled watch repair (wo)man and may have to utilize services by mail. It's a great skill for part or full-time business too.

Interesting Hub. so, now I have an idea of what Horology is all about. I thought the Hub would be something about Horror when I read the title. Thanks for increasing my knowledge. :)
