Friday The 13th Remake
Friday the 13th has been a movie franchise that has been around for years, the first Friday The 13th film appeared in the late 70's and although Jason wasn't in the first film that much as it was his mum killing all the happy campers off around Camp Crystal Lake all because her son Jason drowned and nobody helped him.
This version of Friday the 13th starts off pretty much into the thick of it with the usual first batch of college kids camping out and getting picked off one by one with some very realistic death scenes, of course as a remake this reboots the franchise after the ninth instalment Jason Goes To Hell (I'll forget Jason X as that was set in the future and a totally different film altogether! although Freddy Vs Jason Was Great!)
The story centres around Jason'smum near the beginning as we see Jason witness the beheading of his dear old mum and so the voice of his mum says to avenge her death and so he does, by picking up where his mum left off with a machete and a sack over his head, anyone who goes near or around Crystal lake gets killed because they are bad to Jason's mother.
The first 20 minutes is ace as you can see the tension build with the first round of college idiots who get slaughtered, then after that we have to get used to a second lot of them which is a little too much to handle, but then the body count is higher so I'll let it slide as there are all sortsof good quality death scenes that happen with an arrow through the head and a few machete chops to the head too.
By the end of the film you can see that the film was made by people who care about the characters and were probably fans of the original film series and that translates well to this remake version of the film, although like any other horror slasher movie there are a few dubious parts like when our token black guy decides to have a sly five knuckle shuffle when he must know his friends are in the house and could come in at anytime ....Doh!
Jason runs fast in this one, gone are the days when he is seen to be walking really slow but still manages to catch up to someone and kill them, the opening scenes reflect this well with his weapon of choice - the machete
This film is a great tribute to the older Friday the 13thfilms, but is also a standalone story too that also shows modern film making at work, with some decent actors I've never seen before except Jarad Padelecki from the excellent TV series Supernatural.
So if you like the horror slasher genre like Halloween and something of that ilk, then this film is right up your alley!
