Horses, Horses, Horses
61Home on the Range
Horses can be big, bold and beautiful. I have never owned a horse, but always thought if I ever had the chance to... it would be one animal I would be proud to own, train and show off.
I have always tried to watch the Kentucky Derby, as well as enjoyed the Equestrians whenever they were on television. Their faces are so expressive when in action! I love the sound of their hoofs pounding the ground as they run around the track, or the sound of their breathing as they make the jumps over the hurdles. Lets face it...I practically love every thing about them! The warmth of their breath on your hand when you feed them and the gentle way their lips touch your hand if you hold out an apple to share with them. There is also nothing as wonderful as their soft nicker when they greet you, perhaps while pawing excitedly at the ground with a hoof, as if counting how many steps it takes you to get to them when you enter the stables. You cannot exclude the fact that nothing quite yet also compares to the rodeo or horse shows at your local fair.
You have to love the movie classics like: 'National Velvet' and 'Black Beauty'. Not to mention the story of 'Sea Biscuit' and 'The Horse Whisperer'. All great horse movies that I own and love, including in book form.
So what is that draws us to the horse anyway? They fascinate us with their running style, besides the beauty seen as their manes and tail fly freely in the wind. They can be majestic, fiery spirited, gentle and faithful to a good trainer and gentle owner. They are said to have healing power to assist with the disabled; whether of physical or mental issues. Horses may come in all shapes, color, as well as sizes. Even down to specific nature of breed and personality. But, it is hard to just place one reason as to their popularity, don't you think? Perhaps the answers lie within ourselves and what we look for in the gentle giants.
Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Quarter horses, Welsh, Clydesdale, Palomino, Mustangs...just to name a few. Each unique in their own features and temperament.
I may not own a horse, or have yet had the chance to take horse back riding lessons, have been a part of 4H as a kid, or even been up close and personal as often as I would like, but I wanted to pay tribute to them anyway. They are one of my favorites of the animal kingdom. What else can I say? What's to compare to a horse?

No, I didn't know that India is one of a few who still have a mounted cavalry regiment. How cool is that?: ) Maybe you could do a hub on it? That would be wonderful! You are so lucky to have ridden horses. No wonder you love them! Your sons are lucky too, having some basic knowledge in training.
I guess I can dream of it anyway, huh...riding someday. :)
The President's mounted Body Guard, sounds a lot like those in England. I know they also have polo matches there, and are quite big on them such as with Prince Charles and his sons. I have to honestly say...I've never seen polo, except in movies of course. But, that probably doesn't count, right? : )
Ah...what a treat those pix are! Gwennie you seem quite the animal lover! :)
I'm happy you enjoyed the horse pictures. I love horses, dogs and cats! Not necessarily in that order. But admire all the other animals out there. Thanks for your continued support of my hubs! :)
those are beautiful horse. nice picture. It look strong...
Great hub and beautiful pictures. I too love horses, and used to own my own. Just watching them causes my heart to pound because they look so free. Thanks for sharing. :)
Thanks for visiting another one of my hubs prasetio30. :) Glad you appreciate the horses beauty and their strength.
How cool Raggits, that you can say you use to own horses. I envy you for that! That they can also still affect you in such a wonderful way, as you expressed. Thanks for stopping by! :)
Gwennies - If you ever visit Texas, I'll take you out for a horseback ride :) Can you tell I LOVE showing off my horses? Check out my hub on equine photography.
Thanks silverwindintx, I just might do that! : ) I have a friend who lives in Texas and an aunt with a couple cousins. That sounds great to me. I'd love it. Will definitely be visiting your hubs.

I've always loved horses and rode extensively for four years when in the military academy. After that it's been only watching some horse shows or polo matches. Thanks to the opportunities available in the Services, I was able to get my three boys to get some basic equestrian training, and occasionally even to go out cross country riding.
Wonder if you are aware that the Indian Army is one of the few modern ones in the world which still has a mounted cavalry regiment. There is also the President's Body Guard which is also mounted ...
