55Hot August Nights in Reno and Sparks, Nevada is an annual celebration of some of the most cherished automobiles in the United States. Classic cars line the streets in front of well known casinos. Cars from many makers can usually be found but American models dominate the scene. The numerous owners and competitors range from proud seniors to younger enthusiasts but almost every car is polished and gleaming. They are a true tribute to a lost era as well as wonderful pieces of eye-candy for festival goers to view, photograph, and discuss. Most owners are happy to provide car details and even their stories of acquisition whether a recent purchase, newly refurbished or a precious gem held onto for generations. .
There are food vendors with typical festival treats, T-shirt vendors featuring automotive designs or Hot August Night memorabilia and over 300 booths featuring the latest in hot rod accessories. Crowds of people mill the streets and walks admiring engines, custom paint jobs, and the exquisitely preserved machines that each tells a story of their own. Downtown Reno’s controlled cruise takes place on N. Virginia Street with an evening parade of cars slowly cruising down the street with engines gunning, drivers and passengers waving or even handing out candy.
If you love cars and in particular the old classics with their coveted hood ornaments and smooth lines, Hot August Nights is the place to be with camera in hand. Music lovers won’t be disappointed either with the various live bands playing vintage tunes from the 50s and 60s at different stages throughout the day. The local casinos and sponsors also offer various events including drag races, twinkie eating contests, sock hops, and special exhibits.
