Say no to illegal Ticket Scalpers

We tried to get Billy Joel tickets this morning for the show on July 18th but had just as much luck if not less than we had last week. The thing that stinks is that we want to see the concert rather than wanting to try to make money off of the tickets. This happened when I got a ticket to the Police concert. The two seats next to me were empty. Good for those of us sitting in the area because we had a little more room, but I would have liked to take Ariel to the concert and was willing to pay for the seat. The only glee I can take is that someone lost money on those seats.

This happens in New York all the time. The hot Broadway show is sold out except the hotel ticket counter who has tickets at 4 times the price on the ticket. I want to take Caroline to see the Lion King but it is going to be a while before I can get tickets that work for us. Sports tickets? It amazes me how many tickets are available outside the gate of the game for something that everyone wants to see. There are places like Stubhub but those tickets go for a mint too. There was a tricky way that scalpers use to get around the rules that no longer exist in New York. You would pay an absurd price for a CD or a tape and get the tickets "free" with this purchase.

This all annoys the heck out of me. Basically the bad guys (scalpers) win and the guy who just wanted to take his daughter to a concert that they would both enjoy lose.

I am grateful for the tickets we do get to the hard to get places.

So after missing out on the first show, which sold out within something like 43 minutes, I got up early this morning not going to miss out again. As you can see from the title, Now I admit the first show, I did miss out because I had forgotten that the tickets went on sale that day and remembered hours after the fact.

Now as I said, I got up early this morning (Im running on about 4 hours sleep) to get said tickets. At 9am, I clicked the buy tickets button and was directed to a page that basically said, they were limiting the number of people connecting at once, and that after the 60 second counter ticked down, it would attempt to reconnect to the server.. Now I was on a mission.. I had to get those tickets.. So I did what any other person desperate for tickets would do. I had 3 separate web browsers trying to connect at the same time, (at 20 second intervals)

. Around a 1/2 hour in (about 9:30am EST) out of curiosity, I checked Stubhub.com and saw they had roughly 200+ tickets available to the show, that I couldn't even get past the refresh counter to get the tickets. Now that got me aggravated enough to repeat that scene from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back where they get the list of people and show up at their doors, and slap 'em around a little bit..

The company behind these ticket sales was called 507tixx.com. I believe that its shea's own ticket vendor to avoid going through tickemaster. Prior to this concert I had never heard of them, and quite frankly I hope I never have to attempt to get tickets through them again. At 9:45am this morning, the 60 second refresh counter page was replaced with a connection timed out error. Even as I type this (11:15am) the main page still has a link to buy tickets (which Im sure have been gone for over and hour) and the following link is still broken.

Big day today as Chicago Cubs single game tickets went on sale this morning and Indiana University was frantically trying find someone in the School of Law that could interpret an employment contract so that it would allow them to dump their cheating basketball coach and avoid a) having their pants sued off and b) paying this guy off.

Have you any idea just how fucked up a world we live in when a basketball coach who has been sanctioned once for cheating, is self-reported by his current employer for cheating and accused by an even larger governing body for cheating can parachute out with a multi-million dollar settlement? You break all the rules and you still get paid. Unbelievable. The only thing I can think of more ridiculous is the Dallas Mavericks paying a guy who's been retired for two years $4 million to stay retired.

But nothing official has been released by Indiana. First the coach was fired, then he was suspended to be fired, then the players were quitting in protest, then they weren't, then a news conference was scheduled for 2..or maybe 4....or maybe 6....or maybe not at all. Anyone who spent their day chasing this nonsense seriously spent all day hovered over their interwebs waiting for.....nothing official. Think about that for just a minute. If you are some poor schlub sitting at your computer at home or work, competing with thousands of other computers sharing space, what would be your chances for success? Then consider the scalpers who know the ins and outs of the system and will cut in front of you (virtually) or flood the waiting room so as to render the individual's chances of being selected randomly infinitesimal. So you spend all day sitting there, watching the screen refresh every 30 seconds hoping upon hope that your number will be called next just so you can shovel your hard-earned cash into the coffers of a money-grubbing organization that hasn't pulled down a world series in a century. Good Times indeed.

Let me add, that I also happen to know the scalpers secrets, so I got my tix in less than fifteen minutes. In the words of Lightning McQueen: KA-CHOW!!!

Sorry about all you poor fools who spent your day waiting....and waiting.....and waiting......
