Being a celebrity, or even a wannabe celebrity, means that you need to fulfill certain obligations and follow some social behavioral patterns. One of these responsibilities includes trashing hotel rooms from time to time.

From 1-hit wonders to superstars, every celeb has at some point of time been drunk or high enough, or simply flipped out enough, so as to want to take it out on someone, or something. And almost always, its the hotels and their staff that bear the brunt. Course, there are lots of publicity hungry New York hotels like the Mark (see below) and some in Los Angeles and Miami Beach who wouldn't think twice about asking a celeb to come and trash their rooms. The tabloids and their readers just can't get enough of prima donnas and spoiled rich brats like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan who go around trashing hotel rooms.

Speaking of Paris, a hotelier in France arranged to fly a planeload full of celebrities (including Kanye West and fashion model Cory Kennedy) from the U.S. and other countries all the way to Paris, and then gave them tools to smash up his entire hotel - the Royal Monceau. As you can see in the video above, turned out to be one heck of a party, and garnered great publicity worldwide. The owner was tearing down the hotel for a renovation anyway, and decided to make the most of it.

So assuming that you want to educated about celebrity hotel trasing techniques, here's a few case studies of how celebs go about smashing mirrors, throwing television sets out the window, creating graffiti on walls, what to do with the linen, and most importantly - how to milk the subsequent media frenzy to score valuable PR brownie points. Learn from these experts and follow in their footsteps.

Warning: Any ordinary Joe or Jane attempting to pull off stunts like the ones described below will probably land up in a jail cell and have to pay damages plus a hefty fine.

Maybe hotels in Los angeles might quake at the very sight of Paris Hilton waltzing into their lobby, but as far as street cred for hotel trashing is concerned, she's still a johnny-come-lately. The one who's not a Johnny-come-lately, and the one who sets the bar for all wannabe hotel trashers, is the incomparable Johnny Depp.

Depp's destruction of a $1,200 suite at New York's Mark hotel is still cited as a perfect example of how to trash a hotel room, and earn a free media blitz that's still providing him with free publicity, 14 years after the incident.

This incident happened in the wee hours of the morning, on September 13, 1994. Sleeping guests were startled out of their sleep by the sound of breaking glass and wood and shouting. The voices were those of Johnny Depp and his then girlfriend supermodel Kate Moss, apparently triggered by a domestic argument over the size (or lack thereof) of Depp's manhood. Depp offered to pay for the damages, but refused to leave. Police were called in, and when they entered, the trasher duo were found sitting in the middle of a pile of debris.

Depp was taken in handcuffs to the 19th precinct, kept in a holding cell for several hours and released on condition that he pay the hotel $9,767.12 in damages and guest fees, and stay out of trouble for 6 months. To make things even more wierd, Depp attributed the damage to an armadillo, which he said, was responsible for the damage.

And to top it all off as the best trashing ever, the one who first compained about the disturbance was The Who's Roger Daltrey. The Who, if you'll remember, were famed for their legendary hotel trashing talents. How awesome must Depp's trashing have been, that one of the foremost hotel trashers of that era felt obliged to compain about it?

Afterwards, according to Depp, the Mark's owner thanked Depp's publicist for all the free publicity.

Oh, and one more thing. At that time, Johnny Depp was in the habit of checking into hotels under the name of 'Mr. Donkey Penis', because, he said, it made the wake-up calls more interesting...

The myth of LA's Riot House is part legend, part-copycat wannabe stars trying to gain fame through infamy. But the fact is that this is where the original 'let's throw the hotel room TV out the window' thing started.

The Hyatt West Hollywood on Sunset Blvd., formerly known as the Continental Hyatt House aka Continental Riot House, or simply the 'Riot House'. That would because it had to suffer the fully doped attention and wrath of the members of traveling rock bands on tour like Led Zeppelin, The Who and the Rolling Stones. Apparently the bands preferred Riot House over other Hollywood hotels due to its proximity to hot clubs.

During the Rolling Stones' 1972 North American tour, guitarist Keith Richards and musician Bobby Keyes hauled the television set from Room 1015 out to the balcony, and dropped it down 10 stories. Best part is that Robert Frank got it all on tape for Cocksucker Blues. You can watch the entire 1972 Rolling Stones tour on Youtube. Fascinating stuff. And apparently, The Who's Keith Moon has done the same thing at Riot House. Throw the TV out, I mean.

And so throwing television sets out of hotel windows is now a necessary part of a hotel trashing episode. The Hyatt West Hollywood reopens on Jan 8, 2009 as the Andaz West Hollywood. - www.westhollywood.hyatt.com/

Now, there are different kinds of hotel trashers. The ones listed above, were one-hit wonders, who managed to raise hotel trashing into a work of art, something to be proud about. And then there's the other kind, for whom hotel trashing is more like a fix, something you do to release the pressure, or gain attention, or simply because they have nothing better to do. So they end up as serial hotel trashers.

Under this category, you could lump prima donnas and spoiled brats like British crooner Amy Winehouse, the very well chrocicled antics of Paris Hilton and experimenters like Lindsay Lohan, who will try out anything for a change.

In Nov 2007, Amy Winehouse, with a single plate of spaghetti bolognese, caused massive damage at a hotel in Munich, Germany. Apparently, Snoop Dog was slated to meet her at the room, and watched speechless as Winehouse used the pasta to devastating effect. In Feb 2008, the Sun published accounts of Winehouse trashing the £300-a-night Riverbank Plaza, with cigarette butts, knickers and empty champagne bottles littered across the floor. Apparently, it took the hotel staff a couple of hours to clean out the bathroom. And before all this, in August 2007, Winehouse and hubby Blake Fielder-Civil were involved in a bloody fight at their £500 suite in London's Sanderson Hotel. Damage $18,000.

And Paris Hilton has caught the trash bug so bad, that long-suffering hotels around the world have got tired of her antics, and the Moscow Park Hyatt has gone so far as to charge her $8500 and blacklist her from coming again, after she scrawled her name across the hotel's designer wallpaper. Speaking of getting blacklisted, seems that Santa Monica hotels are off-limits to Lindsay Lohan after she trashed room 645 at the Shutters Hotel in December 2007. LiLo and ex-boyfriend Riley Giles spent 3 days laying waste to the room. When they left and the hotel staff went in, it was a scene from hell, with filth everywhere, dirty towels and cigarette butts lying around, the smell of stale smoke, nd even worse, a bloddy syringe on a room service tray.
