House Training a Dog for a Less Smelly Home
66House Training a Puppy
House training a new puppy can require a lot of patience. The only thing you can control is the way you react to your dog when he makes mistakes and when it comes to giving him opportunities to use the restroom. The most important thing to remember is that getting angry when a mistake is made will only set you back. The dog will be afraid to go to the restroom in front of you if it associates you being angry whenever it goes. Really the best way to keep accidents from happening is to prevent them. So you ask how can you know when your dog is going to need to use the restroom? There are a few methods that can help you to know this.
Methods for Potty Training
One useful method is to use a dog kennel for potty training. It is important for the dog to feel comfortable with the kennel first. You will probably need to introduce it slowly by putting all good things that you give the dog in the kennel. You will also want to gradually leave the dog inside of the kennel at growing lengths of time. never let the puppy out of the kennel if she is crying. Wait for the instant that she stops. You can teach your dog to not cry in the kennel by having a big bag of tasty treats and every time the dog stops crying, throw in a treat. Once this is achieved you can move on to crate training your puppy or dog. The main reason this method works is because dogs don't like to sleep in an area that they have soiled. In order for this to work you must have a small crate because if it's too large the puppy will just go on the other side after its use the restroom. There is a way to litter train dogs, I have written a hub about that. Learning how to clicker train your dog could also be very helpful in this process. Some of the best resources for this are in dog training books.
Dog House Training Tricks
If you are trying to teach an old dog to be house trained, the first thing you'll need to do is clean up any spots that you know of in the house that has been soiled with an enzyme cleaner. The best cleaner that I know of for this is created by Nature's Miracle. This is an important step because it is instinctual for your dog to go back to spots he had used to go potty. An adult dog learns how to be house trained in the same methods that a puppy does. Usually if the dog has bad habits, it has more to do with the owner. Maybe the owner just doesn't understand when their dog has go to the restroom.
Make sure to let the dog go out to use the restroom after he has woken up or shortly after he has eaten. Keep in mind that puppies have small bladder and need to use the restroom more often than adult dogs. Also remember that puppies are babies, all of this is new to them and they don't understand what you want. You can't rely on the dog or puppy to tell you when it needs to use the restroom, otherwise you probably wouldn't be trying to teach it where use restroom. Puppies need to go out to use the restroom at least every two hours. Also make sure to bring them out before playing with them and afterwards, because they will need to go more in these times.
It is very useful to associate a set of words when the dog is using the restroom. For example one would say "go potty" or something of the like when the dog was actually going to the restroom. This can be very very useful because it can turn into a command. You should be able to tell the dog to go potty and then he will actually go. You should also make a really big deal of it when the dog has finished going potty. You can do this with treats, praise, you can even jump up and down, do a dance and be very excited. This will let your dog know that he did the right thing and that using the bathroom is not a bad thing.
