Be Patient

Two things are key in housebreaking your new puppy fast, patients and repetition and it doesn't hurt to have a few treats on hand.  Keep in mind that the pup is going through the same "getting to know you process" that you are and they are probably a little scared.  Also keep in mind that the dog, depending on it's age, has some biological limitations; they just can't hold it.

The theory of positive and negative reinforcement that works with how and why people do the things we do will work with your dog; they are very smart and unlike other people their main goal in life will soon be to please you.  If you are one of those people that think "hey, it's just a dumb dog", you probably shouldn't get one.  Chances are the dog will be smarter than you and this will lead to resentment on your part and frustration on the part of the pet.

I suggest housebreaking be done by teaching the pup to go potty outside.  Paper training is OK but if you have a large breed dog this may not be a wise decision for obvious reasons.  Also, at some point you will eventually want the dog to go outside anyway so why do this twice?

With that being said the simple process of training can begin.  Once again be patient, continue to remind yourself, especially at 3am, that the puppy wants nothing more than to make you proud and happy, they are trying their best.  Repetition is the most important part of the process.  Remember in the beginning the pup is not going to know how to let you know what they need, this is primarily what is being taught.  Take them outside often and always use the same verbal command prior to taking them out; keep it short and simple but be consistent.  When I first got my dog I took her out about 5 or 6 times an hour, my wife thought I was crazy and said there is no way that dog can go that much.  She was right, but the pup was learning what the routine was all about.  Believe it or not, in a very short time you will see the dog make an attempt to go every time you take them out.  This is the first sign that they are getting the idea.  Watch them close, the same chain of events that they go through outside prior to doing their job are the same actions they will go through in the house.  For example, they will become active and start wandering aimlessly and smelling the floor.  At this point say your command, not loud but firm, and take them out.

They are going to have accidents at first, do not punish them for this it is normal and cannot be helped.  Believe me the puppy already feels bad for doing it and if you pay close attention to their actions you will see that they already know it was wrong.  Praise is the most important part of training rather it be verbal or a treat or both, dogs eat this up and it is the best way to promote good behavior.  By not getting praised when they do wrong is punishment enough.

At some point, probably sooner than you think, the puppy will find a way to let you know when they want to go out; each dog is unique and will have their own way of doing this.  keep in mind this is a puppy, as you know by now they love to play and sometimes this is what they will be wanting to go outside for, be patient, it is not a bad thing that they want to play.  Look at this in a positive way, it was smart enough to let you know.
