I have always wanted to build and fly my own hovercraft. I looked at hovercraft kits, some new and used ones and they all cost more than my wife would let me spend.
After doing a little research on the web I found a very reasonable set of hovercraft plans and bought them. I really wanted a complete kit but in the long run this option turned out even better.
With her approval I headed off to my local Home Depot and bought what I needed. The plans were very straight forward and easy to follow. I loved the building process.
I got a hold of a decent engine at a local garage sale and with in 2 weeks working on it in my spare time I was ready to fly my very own hovercraft.
We own several acres of lake from land so I had plenty of room. I started it up and floated across my back yard.
It takes a little getting used to the controls but once you do it is pretty easy to fly. My second run I started it up, blasted through the yard and across the lake. I circled back and pulled up to the back of my house grinning ear to ear.
I am now building a second one for the wife. If you are interested in building one I can tell you the whole process was easy to learn nothing special about it or the materials. In fact my second on I will be doing some mods on it.
If you can use some basic tools you can build your own hovercraft kit from plans.

My Buddy came by and took it for a spin and took off through my neighborhood. He ended up getting pulled over by the police. They said he couldn't drive it down the street like he was and let him off with a warning. Luckily they didn't say anything about the open beer he had with him. I think they were more amused than anything. It was a good laugh though.

Update: Well I crashed the first one I built. I was playing around doing some tweaking while I was buzzing around our lake and slammed into my neighbors boat. I was looking down at the time and never seen it coming. Good thing my wife made me wear a life jacket because all I remember is flying through the air without my hovercraft.
Hovercraft was totaled and my neighbor was not too happy. Nothing happened to me luckily.
I am 2/3 done with my next hovercraft project. This one will have twice as much power and I did a few mods to the original plan. Should be fun.
By the way I think I started something, 2 of my buddies around the neighborhood are building one. Can you say hovercraft races soon?? :)

Are you giving out free copies of your plan, I would like to build one also. I don't mind paying for the plans, but I would like to use your mods, since you worked out the flaws.

I'm interested in building a hovercraft myself. I doubt you'll give the plans away for free, but can you at least tell me what tools/equipment I would need?
When I first started I had basic hand tools, A jig saw,power saw,drill, nothing really special.
If you want to get into more advanced designing you will need more specialty tools. I bought a lot of mine at garage sales.
My husband has a new idea for a hovercraft type of machine and I wondered if the plans would be the same for the hover part or if I need to keep looking.
Yes you could take the plans and modify them like I did, The hover part could be used as a base and built from there.
I followed the plans for the first one after that I started coming up with my own designs based off the original. Lot of fun.... I like the building process

Hey, I'm gonna make a hovercraft for my 7th grade science fair project, so do you know how much all of your materials cost? And about how long did it take you to make it, and one last question, do you think 2 7th graders and my dad who is skilled with this kind of thing are able to do it?

Hi Im 18 and I have been trying to build a hovercraft and had a few questions like how stable was your hovercrafton the ground and on the water it just seemed like it would be a little tipsy and also I understand the concept of a hovercraft but I cant figure out how to build a skirt for it well i hope you can help me Thanks.

hay chief here im bilding one right now and the thing is its so easy to make bider or smaller becouse we desined it to beable to be taken apart so the frames out of pvc and ya it can be put in like a shipping box

Wow to bad no one offers free plans. all the peopel that either try to do them as home projects or for school and you cant find plans anywhere.
