Do You Know How Grapes Are Being Produced?

Who doesn't enjoy fresh grapes after work or perhaps a glass of wine a Saturday evening?

Grapes are delicious and I like them really much and I think you do to but do you really know how grapes are grown? If you don't know then I'm going to explain it to you in a really simple way.

Grapes that you can buy in the store today are actually clones. Yes it's true!

The plant they are grown on comes from cuttings or clippings from an existing plant. The cutting is a part of an existing grape vine that has been treated with growth hormones so it will develop roots. This clipping is then planted in soil and after a while it has grown to vibrant grape vine. This process takes about 12 months and it's quite hard because grape vines require a lot.

How about the seeds in the grapes then?

Well, you could get the seeds to grow as well. The problem is that the genetic material in each seed vary so much that it isn't sure that you will get the same grape that you took the seeds from.

You might get a kind with very small grapes or a kind with very large grapes, or perhaps a kind with no grapes at all.

By using cuttings you take out the guesswork from the equation because you are actually growing a clone. You already know which type of grapes this sort of grape vine will produce.

But it's pretty cool to experiment a bit to see what types of grapes you can get if you grow from seeds. I have a small tutorial on how to grow grapes from seeds for you if you are interested. But I warn you, the process takes a long time and it's not certain that you get the results that you wished for.

To start you should get a hold of the type of grapes that you like and then extract the seeds. Follow the link that I gave you for the next few steps. Also if you want to grow seedless grapes you will have to find clipping of seedless grapes.. It's kind a hard to grow grapes from grapes that has no seeds. =)

Just a little reminder: Grapes need a lot of sun and access to water. They also need poor soil.

Get started!
