How Come Oprah Keeps Asking People For Money?

I know everyone just Loves Oprah but It seems like every time I watch her show she's asking people for money. Isn't she one of the richest people in the world? She makes $385 million a year, $1.05 million a day or $43,000 an hour. She wants people from middle to lower class incomes to give their change to help other people who are middle and lower classed.

It is estimated that it cost about $3.00 to feed a child a day. The average cost to take care of a child for a year is about $30,000 a year. Oprah makes more than that in one hour.

If she took one years worth of income and donated it, she could afford the following:

She can buy 385 one million dollar mansions for the homeless

385 one million dollar private jets for people who are waiting for emergency medical procedures

She can buy 96,250,000 Big Macs and give them to the homeless or eat them herself

She can buy 38,500 prothetic legs for disabled veterans at $10,000 a piece

She could buy groceries for 385,000 families. At $100 each she could feed a family of four dinner for one night

She could buy 256,666,666 gallons of fresh water for people who don't have access to clean water

She could buy toddler's and struggling college students 1,540,000,000 packages of Top Ramen

She can employ 14,000 laid off California school teacher's for a year.

And this is where she lives

This is where I live.

Since I can't do any of that,  "Oprah! Stop asking me for money!!!!"

I have always thought that if the top 1% wealthy americans just gave up 1 of their many millions to those more unfortunate, that would be astounding what kind of help that would be, instead of having the low/middle class pay for everyone! I loved all of the ways you thought of how to use Oprah's money! Very creative - but I don't think she'd have a show on that any time soon!

Peppermint Thrift- Ha Ha! Yeah, I don't think I'll be getting a phone call from her show. I'm okay with that though:)

Christine, Oprah has contributed millions of dollars to charity all over the world, but I'm sure you knew that. I've seen her on tv giving money towards the education of children here and abroad, but I'm sure you knew that. I've seen her on tv giving money to the habitat for humanity, matching donations, but I'm sure you knew that. She's given money for mosquito net to Africa... I could go on...

Nice hub though.

Great hub christine, anyway I think Oprah just encourage us to have a giving heart, that's all.

febriedethan- I agree. Thanks for reading. I'm not trying to rip her apart, all I am saying is that someone who lives in a 85 million dollar home shouldn't be asking me for money. I like her. I acknowledge her charity and empathy. But if I made 300,000,000 a year, I would have a hard time asking anyone for money, for any charity or good cause. So to all the Oprah lovers in the world, I am not attacking her. I'm making a point.

Have you ever wondered about how she can afford to gives cars and stuff away on her show? She doesn't. They are donated by that company for the publicity.

If you give anything away on her show for free, you will make fifty times that just from the publicity.

To all you die hard Oprah fans, nothing that I say is gonna change your mind about her. And it shouldn't. It's my opinion.

I always liked Oprah, but have reservations about her since she jumped on the political bandwagon in 2008. I don't like entertainers thinking they are in a position to tell the public how to think or how to vote. That isn't their expertise - entertaining is. Now, you say she's telling people how to use their money? Again, entertainers should entertain and not tell us what to do. She can set an example by making her donations public, but telling others to do the same is out of line.

It would be interesting to know how much - if anything - she donated to charities before she was wealthy.

English Teacher- You make a good point about wondering if she gave any charity when she wasn't so rich. I would hope that she did. I'm sure the amount that she gives now (for tax purposes) is a drop in the bucket to what she makes yearly. I know her donations have changed many people's lives but seriously, sitting in a 85 million dollar house, asking people for money is sort of weird. I do get the fact that her motivation for charity is out of compassion and empathy for the people less fortunate. I'll give her that. Have you guys seen the 'Oprah Effect'? It's very interesting how much people think of her as a god.

Fantastic you such good internet connection from that shack!! Hey why have 'they' laid off 14,000 Californian teachers? Where I come from, Australia, we're crying out for them!! Come on down under and teach

thecafehunter- ha ha ha! I have the bundle package. Internet, phone and cable, all for a small deal in my hut. California laid off 14,000 teachers because, although Cali makes 1 trillion dollars a year in taxes from the entertainment industry, didn't have enough money to pay them. That's what we get (I'm from Cali) for voting for Arnold for Senator huh? One of the richest citites in the world, go figure. It's a disgrace.

Oprah can't save the world and she does donate a tremendous amount of money to charities and to her foundations. She has the power to encourage people to donate and help also because people listen to her, but no one is obligated to do anything unless they are able to help. There are many many people in this country and around the world who are financially able to help out so don't fell intimidated.

Interesting Hub. This caught my eye as I like Oprah. I wonder if she was asking on behalf of a charity because I know she's a very generous woman. Do you remember that show where every one in the audience was given a little box and asked not to open it. Apparently, a few of the boxes had keys to cars. Well, when the moment came for everyone to open their box, everyone had a key. That day all the studio audience went home with a brand new car from Oprah. I know she has also been to Africa to do a lot of work and made huge donations.

So, like I said, I wonder if she's asking on behalf of a Charity. :)

Funny but I think really applicable.

It would mean a lot more if celebrities in general asking for money from us disclosed how much they donated. Because someone like Oprah could donate 1 million which is like what 1/300th of her income. Thats like $100-$200 for middle class.

I agree... Now she has given money to charity... or has she given our money to charity? I will admit to donating but i do not anymore. Who really paid for all those mosquito nets? I am jobless now and she isn't helping me and my four children. My ex is deceased and we do get social security death benefit but it doesn't pay the rent! Where's my help Oprah? I wrote a letter and asked for help, I didn't get one response.
