I recently came across a great resource – albeit disturbing – a book by Andrew Lewis called Dog Food Secrets.

The basic premise of this book is that dog food companies are using inferior, harmful ingredients in their dog food, all to keep production costs down and increase the shelf life of dog food at stores. Because pet food is not regulated because the government agencies, such as the FDA, do not regulate nutrition for animals, this gives commercial dog food companies leeway to cut corners and compromise the quality of commercial dog food in the interests of mainting the most profitability possible.

The author, Andrew Lewis, found his inspiration in creating this valuable resource in his little beagle, Noble. Noble had to be put down because at the relatively young dog age of only 4 years old, he contracted kidney failure from consuming commercial dog food.

When Lewis brought Noble to the vet, thinking he only had a stomach virus, the news was unfortunately broken to him that Noble had to be put down, as his kidneys shut down. When Lewis asked how this was possible, that a 4 year old energetic dog could contract kidney failure, the answer the vet gave him shocked him: the preservatives and other harmful ingredients in dog food slowly damaged Noble's kidneys until they finally shut down. In horror, Lewis had to watch as Noble was put to sleep, and lived for a while with a guilt that he was responsible for “killing” his little buddy Noble.

• The processed feces of other dead animals.

• Putrid road kill.

• Pet collars, flea collars, ID tags and plastic bags from euthanized pets

Although some of these claims seems shocking, and somewhat unbelievable, they are thoroghly backed up with evidence that cannot be questioned – that is, perhaps what the most disturbing aspect of this book is – the evidence and documentation cannot be argued whatsoever.
