How Composting Works
How Composting Works

In this article, I’ll explain how composting works and how you can make compost at home.

Households around the world generate tons of compostable food waste every year. These food and scraps could be used to make compost, instead of going into landfills.

So, what actually is composting?

Composting is basically treating and breaking down solid waste into useful organic materials with the help of microorganisms in the presence of oxygen. The broken down product is called compost or humus that act as natural fertilizer for gardening and farming.

The best compost contains balanced amount of materials such as vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings etc that are rich in nitrogen and materials rich in carbon such as leaves, straw, grass clippings, shredded paper, coir fiber, wood pellets, or sawdust etc.

How Composting Works

Everything on earth rots with time in presence of air and water. Tiny bugs called bacteria help the process of composting. These microorganism breaks down solid food waste until the waste gets converted into a soil-like material called natural fertilizer or humus.

Since composting is more or less controlled by microorganism, the best composting process will take place in bins or pile that encourage the growth or these bacteria. During the process of composting and creating rich humus for garden, these microorganisms break down the waste on a cellular level and create water, carbon dioxide, and heat.

Once the process is over, we get humus rich natural fertilizer.
