What is a fan campaign?

Fan campaigns are a type of movement by fans who want to make an impact on a show, pairing or other aspect of a TV or movie.  When fandom moved to the Internet, it opened a whole world of communication betweens fans all over the world.  Before, when a major American TV show ran its course, fans in America would speak up and networks would usually dismiss them and do what they wanted to do in the first place.  Now, when an international audience steps up and says hear us out, networks have no choice but to take a second look at fan campaigns presented at them.  They may not listen, they may dismiss them but they cannot ignore that fans and their campaigns will go a long ways to being heard when it comes to their love and support of a TV show, movie or other form of media.

How do fan campaigns work online

When fans get online, they can reach a much broader audience related to what they love and follow.  Web sites, forums, chat rooms, instant messages and more can be used to communicate, plan and execute a fan campaign.  E-mail can be utilized in many ways, most notably in the daytime soap fandoms, along with contacting media outlets to get out word on a fan campaign and reach those in charge of shows instantly.  In the past, postal mail – which is still an effective method of fan campaigning – was the only way to reach the people in charge at a network.  Now, with a simple e-mail, you can reach them instantly and show them immediately what you think and feel about a show and what is going on with plots, characters and other aspects.

How to get involved in fan campaigns

Getting involved in a fan campaign is relatively easy nowadays.  Simply hop on the Internet, search for your fandom and see what is out there.  Forums, web sites and more pop up to support TV shows, movies, pairings, characters and more every day.  Some are bigger than others, some lead the way in fan campaigning.  Others support fan campaigns even if they did not start it.
