Peanut Butter, How Do I Love Thee?? Let Me Count The Ways.

Ahh, Peanut Butter.

Who doesn’t like peanut butter? Certainly not me. I hold a special place in my heart for this wondrous concoction of ground roasted peanuts. I’ve been eating peanut butter on a regular basis for my whole life.

Peanut butter has a long and and interesting history. As early as 550 BC, peanut plants were grown in South America. The Incas were known to grind peanuts into a paste-like substance. For over 500 years, Africans have added ground peanuts into their stews. The Chinese were using crushed peanuts in some of their creamiest sauces before recorded history.

Americans such as Dr Harvey Kellogg, George Washington Carver, (known as the father of the peanut industry) and CH Sumner,(who introduced peanut butter to the general public from his concession stand at the 1904 St Louis World’s Fair) contributed to the development of the peanut butter that we know and love today.

Peanut butter is the perfect stand-by food. Hungry, running late, need something quick and portable? Make yourself a quick PB&J. Midnight snack? Spoonful of peanut butter, right out of the jar. Your kid wants to make his own lunch for school? Once again, peanut butter sandwich to the rescue.

Of course there is so much more to peanut butter than just the sandwich. (not that I’m knocking the peanut butter sandwich, read on....)

Here are a few of my favorite ways to eat peanut butter:

Oatmeal with peanut butter: Top still-warm serving of cooked oatmeal (old-fashioned is best) with a large blob of chunky peanut butter. Add some chopped dried fruit (I like apricot) and a sprinkle of cinnamon. This is a healthy breakfast that really fills you up.

Instead of butter, spread creamy peanut butter on top of warm waffles or pancakes, then cut into bite-sized pieces and drizzle just a little fruit flavored syrup on top.

Peanut butter is perfect for spreading on sliced apples, on a banana, pretzels, or just plain-old saltines. Try it on ice cream, celery (with raisins on top), or graham crackers.

Add a big spoonful of creamy peanut butter to smoothies. Milk, banana, berries, juice, peanut butter.... it's surprisingly good!

I could go on and on…

Peanut butter makes many recipes richer and creamier, including fudge, sauces, and soups, breads and cookies.

Honorable Mention..

Of course I couldn't end this hub without a shout-out to Peanut Butter Cups. Milk chocolate and peanut butter.... what could be better?

To sum it all up...

There's no surprise that peanut butter is one of America's favorite pantry staples, found in 75% of American homes.

So open that pantry, move aside the Captain Crunch and Spaghetti-O's, get out the peanut butter, and enjoy!

Peanut butter is also a fav. of mine . :)

My son loves a grilled peanut butter sandwich (I make it just like grilled cheese only put in PB instead.)

And, as for the PB bugers- I was watching food network just the other night and saw this juicy burger grilled and then topped with about 1/4 cup peanut butter and then on top of that- a large tablespoon of real mayo. The guy (the host of the show which I can't remember off hand) who tasted it and ate it said it was one of the best burgers he ever had. :) I just happen to remember it clearly because as I said, PB is a fav of mine too. I wasn't so sure it would go good with the mayo but I have to admit it sure looked good and I plan on trying to make one soon.

I enjoy your hubs a lot - you always keep it fun and interesting.

Hello, maven101, glad that you liked some of the PB ideas, and yes, I agree, peanut butter and honey on toast, especially some kind of hearty whole grain, is absolutely fabulous!

vanderhaven- the main thing about the burgers with peanut butter on this recipe is to combine everything and then put them in the fridge for awhile, I think that makes the fat in the peanut butter set so it doesn't run all out when you cook the burgers... yummy yum yum

I am so glad that you enjoy my writing, that means a lot to me!

blue dog, been making grilled PB&J's for a long time, give it a whirl, or try the sandwich mega1 mentioned in the above comment. (eat and then rub tummy in clockwise motion while saying mmmmm.....)

mega1, ok, now I'm hungry again! thanks for your comment, and I'm going to try that sandwich.

Mighty Mom, Smuckers also has a good natural peanut butter, I like the extra chunky the best..

Who doesn't love peanut butter - never mind that it tops the list in calories? Someone did once say that it packs in a pile of protein and Vit E too.

I'm already yearning for a hot toast with a nice thick spread of the extra chunky variety topped off with orange marmalade or honey! :)
