How Do I deal With A BiPolar person In The Family?
73Handle with care - family member with Bipolar
The illness Bipolar was called Manic Depressive - which probably is more descriptive. People with bipolar illness have great swings of mood. They can be as "high as a kite" with enthusiasm and excitement" and then have great lows - so depressed that they self harm or worse.
The most important thing is to get properly diagnosed and managed. Medication can keep the moods more even - so it is imperative that the medicine is taken diligently and that a family member/friend/carer is in tune with the signs of mood changes.
Sometimes it is wise to make arrangements so that they can't give away all their money, belongings or whatever when they are in a high mood and feel generous and wonderful. (Many families have been financially ruined by the actions of someone on such a high) When they are in a depressive state they need to be well supervised to keep them safe.
Managing someone within a family is fraught with challenges - it is wise to get as much quality advice as possible. Talk with others who have a family member with the illness, talk with specialists, and have a good medical team in support of you all.
On the positive side - there are many high achievers who have managed to do well, despite their illness.

Thank you MrMarmalade. I do have some "expertise" in this area as I once worked as an R/N in a psychiatric hospital. Do you have someone with bipolar in the family?
My mother is bipolar and she will not take her meds. She becomes paranoid that I am trying to control her. ug...
Yes, it is a common theme sadly. And things go downhill quickly often. I wonder what your strategy is with your mother? CAn you legally force her to have treatment.
My daughter is diagnosed Bp, my son is diagnosed HD. What a mix! Sorry they are also very immature, so the blow are almost daily. This couple have three beautiful children (11,6, and 3) who are becoming basket cases. The six girl has become a problem in her first grade class. She is hyper active. She is very perceptive about her home situation and thus, very nervous and concern about her parents constant bickering, She has voiced to me how she wishes her parents would not fight so much. When the daughter in-law and son became aware of the child's discussed to me, they PROHIBITED her from takling to me about their problems, you'll never talk to grandmother if all you tell her about us. Any recommendations n how to handle this volitile situation? Both are on meds.
Tottie - great Hub. I have a close family member with BP. It has been a real roller coaster and she has suffered greatly through her own actions and the actions of others. While its important to take medication - this isn't the whole answer.
After crashing out of University and ending up on a psyc. ward, breakthroughs came via things like a residential self-help course run by a UK charity called 'Steady'. She also received significant help from an Occupational Therapist who helped her to get a volunteer job and then a paid job. She now has a successful career as an Occupational Therapist specialising in mental health in the British National Health Service.
But it is never easy with a loved one with this diagnosis. One key to managing the illness is to accept the support of family members, friends and trusted work colleagues.
I have much sympathy for anyone with a family member with a psychiatric diagnosis. The whole family is affected by it - and there is often no easy solution. I am pleased Rik that your sister seems to have made a great recovery. Even professionals have differing views at times, so it is like a giant puzzle with many missing pieces. Best wishes to you all.
My mother is bipolar and when she is in a depressed mode how do I keep the abuse she serves upon me from causing resentment. I understand that this is a disease or maybe I dont but I dont want to deal with it anymore how can I change this feeling because I do love her.
First of all you seek help for YOU. Maybe talk with a counsellor or psychologist. It is natural to find it difficult to deal with, and even if you do love your mother it may be very difficult to cope despite all your best efforts. You can only do what you can do. Seem professional help.
Hey. Im 14 my mother is bi polar. She goes into depressive mode and has "episodes" sometimes that can either be bad or mild. Sometimes she goes to attack me but when I tell her don't you dare she denies having tried anything at all. I am an optimist and I am not negetive about this as I have experience and I know that it's not meant personally, but are there any ways to calm down a bi polar when they are temper ridden? She won't get diagnosed either but I KNOW she is bi polar as she has all the symptoms and mood swings etc.. I don't think its me that needs help though, it's EVERYONE in my house! She is driving us crazy! Any advice?
