How to Deal with a Mean Boss

How do you deal with a boss who degrades you in public? You do not deal with the boss at all. The best thing to do is to speak with the boss in a private area of the facility and let him know that the manner in which he talks to you is inappropriate. It is amazing that a few bosses do not realize that everyone does not have to be humiliated in public to get them to work productively.

Once you have spoken to the boss privately and not in an argumental or disagreeable manner, then make sure that you are the model employee. There is no conceivable reason for the boss to yell at you if you are doing you work to the best of your ability. If you make a mistake in your work and we all do at times, listen to the criticism constructively and then talk to him privately if his tone was rude. It is best to address the boss at the time of the incident for relevance and to solve the problem right away. No one wants to sleep on ill feelings only to come to work the following day with the same chip on your or his shoulder.

If the boss yells at you again and you have already met with him about the previous incident, then you may have to speak to the boss above him. At this time it is very important to consider the status of the job. If the job is an hourly job in which you may be easily replaced, began to look for other employment. The boss may have surmised that his workers are used to being talked to in such a manner and may be difficult to change or alter his attitude especially in a fast hectic place like a fast food restaurant.

If you are concerned about the yelling and condensation or degradation then you are a person of high self esteem whether you are hourly or a six figure worker. Begin looking for other employment and make sure that the job you are looking for is a step up in the right direction. It would not make sense to leave one job and go to another job of the same caliber expecting different treatment even though most people would think that a boss would know how to talk to am employee amicably.

Weigh the pros and cons of staying or leaving and use your strength that got you to request help with dealing with a rude boss to move on. It takes a lot of strength to not accept a person even a person in authority who is being disrespectful to you especially in these difficult economic times of layoffs and unemployment. You know your financial situation and you know how much of this boss you can take. You want to start saving your money instead of shopping so that you can be in a position to look for another job without accepting the first offer that may be more of the same.

Be sure to give the proper two weeks notice and have at least six months of you take home pay saved before making a move. You want to leave amicably and may need references for a better job. No job is worth the aggravation of coming to work everyday and being treated in an unprofessional manner. Put your best professional manner about you and be all about the job if you can not leave right away. Learn somehow how to respect the position that the boss holds if you are beginning not to like him for the way he talks to you.

Do not join into any gossip with other employees because all you are doing is reinforcing the incident and making it a part of your history when you discuss it with others. Do not discuss anything that the boss says to you about how you are perfoming your job or your attendance. By all means do not give the rude boss anything that he can hold against you like coming in late and being excessively absent. Find a reason to come to work everyday even if it get difficult.. Come to work for the customers and to prove to yourself that you can do a good job. Do a good job for the manager position if not for the manager himself. Try to stand out in a good way and do not give in to the habit of discussing and talking about the boss behind his back. Let whatever he tells you that may not be true to go over your head or rebut any bad remarks in an intelligent manner.

Go to work everyday with the goal of saving towards something that you value or to add to your savings if the purpose of going to work and hearing the yells of the boss is getting to be a little too much. If you need to talk to someone talk to a trusted friend but at no time should you talk about the yelling incidents with the people you work with.

You may find yourself an army of one at the Christmas Party when you are sulking while they are having fun. Misery loves company and you should not bring the misery of a yelling boss to the work place. In fact do not show misery at all. Look at ways of flight and use your might to save to get to a much better place. Unemployment is rampart but a yelling boss is not worth it.

Thanks for answering my request. Its embarassing when the boss acts up like that in front of customers. C'mon now, we are suppose to be professionals? This guy doesn't listen to anyone, not even his wife. If he doesn't listen, then I'm gonna have to bring in my godfather who also knows him well.

I don't know why you are going to bring your godfather in or who you godfather is but it is a good thing if you plan to have your godfather talk to your boss in a civil manner. However if your boss does not listen to his wife, I dont know if he will listen to anyone else. Just do your best work, you seem to know the kind of person you are dealing with and hopefullly you can move on. Good luck and have a nice day.

Some Boss's simply should not be Boss's. Best idea in dealing with a bad Boss, "is buy the company and fire them"...LOL

Great hub as you shared some helpful views - although not any one view will work on all Boss's - people are tricky beings!

Thanks

Neil Sperling, thank you for your comment. I had to chuckle with your advice to buy the company and fire them all. Sounds good.

Now this is a hub many should take into account. Especially those in management positions who feel they can speak to any given human being as they see fit. Where I work management is very well known for most of the things you brought up, and then some. It is truly otrocious, and training emphasizing proper communication in the work place should be mandatory in every company.

One2recognize2, thank you for your comment. You know sometimes the work day goes by a little easier when shared information about how management should treat employees like human beings is shared. Why not share the article

How to Deal with a Rude Boss, but no company emails.

When it comes to Bad Bosses, I’ve looked the other way far to long. It’s time for us to fight back. The War on Bad Bosses is a grass roots campaign that will turn businesses, as we know them, upside down and make them the the kind of workplaces that everyone looks forward to going to every day.

What I came to conclusion is that, as Harry Paul said, fight and kill him.

NarayanKrishna, thank you for your comment. Fighting your boss to the end is a little extreme. To avoid trouble, if your boss is really mean,it is best to just move on.
