Ultimately it is best to not let yourself get into debt in the first place but if you do manage to find yourself in debt you should try to get out of it as quickly as you can.

If you have more than one debt it is a good idea to consolidate your loans into one loan, usually the mortgage. This way you will reduce the amount of interest that you are paying as well as making monthly payments easier since you only have one payment to worry about.

If you have gotten into a lot of credit card debt then the first thing you should do is cut up your credit cards. If you don't have the cash to purchase something then that means that you really can't afford to buy it anyway. Credit cards have an enormous interest rate and if you find yourself in credit card debt it can be very hard to get rid of that debt.

You may need to start cutting back on spending and changing the way you think about spending. Managing finances is a learned behavour that anyone can learn and if you can learn to manage your finances it is a skill that will help you for the rest of your life.

Stop spending, learn some saving techniques and cut up your credit cards.

Trouble is its so easy to fall into this trap!!

I have and am now having to deal with it--contact your creditors--be honest with them--an ostrich approach will only get you a kick up the a*** tell them what you can afford to pay them each month--you'll be surprised how helpful some of them can be.
