Getting out of Debt

Getting out of debt is a heck of a lot harder than getting into it, and the biggest culprit for personal debt is Credit cards. They are so easy to use, it's like you are spending some one elses money. Thing is though, you're not!

1. The first thing you need to do is not despair. There is light at the end of the tunnel. It might be a bit far away, but it is there.

2. Your second step is to be completely 100% honest with yourself. If you are not, there is no point in trying to sort it out. Believe it our not, being honest with yourself is probably the hardest thing to do.

3. Once you have done that you need to see it in chart form in black and white. This should be on a big chart, that you should be able to see from across the other side of the room.

4. Create another chart with your income, and your regular expenditure (utilities, groceries, insurance).

5. Look for way you can reduce your regulare outgoings (be creative, and do your research). Simple things can reduce your costs. Don't leave your tv on standby, turn your laptop and computer off, bring you lunch to work, all of that kind of thing.

6. Once you have established your extra disposable monthly amount take 10-20% and arrange to SAVE it. There is no point in paying off your debts if you have no nest egg. Now you have the amount to pay off your creditors.

7. Negotiate with your Creditors. Your creditors want to get their money, they do not want you to go bankrupt and never get anything. Don't get talked into taking out any insurancesto cover this, as some creditors may try to tell you that you have to. It's not true, you don't, and you have enough problems with debt WITHOUT getting into more.

If you can negotiate with them, a grace period for interest, reduced payments etc; If you don't feel comfortable negotiating there are so many voluntary groups in your area who will help you for either a small fee or for nothing.

I have made a step by step plan which goes into pages of detail, so if you would like more information just CLICK HERE the plan is free and downloadable.

Razorblades,

Nice post. I too have had my run in with debt. Like you, I also followed 7 steps to get back out of the hole I dug myself in. If interested, I wrote about it here:

Now I'm going to go and check out your step by step plan - I'd like to stay out out of debt, now that I'm there! ;-)
