A scooter is a type of motor vehicle with two wheels. The wheels are less than 16” in diameter and the engine is located at the rear end of the scooter below the rider. The main difference between a scooter and a motorcycle is the position of the engine. A motorcycle has the engine placed in the middle of its frame. The rider sits astride the engine. While the motorbike’s engine is stationary, that of a scooter is mobile. Scooters can be automatic or manual.

Another glaring difference between the two machines is the wheel sizes. The wheels of a motorcycle are much larger, greater than 16” in diameter.

Decongesting Cities

Scooters are popular because they are cheap to run and do not require a lot of experience to ride. Anyone with some experience riding motorcycle can easily handle a scooter. To put the icing on the cake, once can ride a scooter in major cities around the world without a license! In fact populous cities like in India and China encourage people to use scooters to ease traffic congestion and due to the fact that they do not take up much parking space. This goes a long way in decongesting these cities.

Carrying Capacity

Motorcycles are generally faster than scooters but scooters are easier to ride because of their low speeds. This also makes them safer to ride than motorcycles. Scooters usually have a small engine ranging from 50 to 250 cc. Cc is denotes the engine’s carrying capacity. However, scooters with much larger carrying capacities, between 400 and 800cc, have been manufactured. A Scooter’s engine is not complicated. It can easily be modified to increase speed and power.

Types of Scooters

Scooters can be classified into different categories depending on their carrying capacity and uses. An air scooter is a very light helicopter while a diving scooter is diving equipment used by scuba divers to gain a deeper and wider range while underwater. An ice scooter is a light vehicle used to travel very fast across ice, snow or water.

A kick scooter is a two-wheeled machine used by children for playing. It is pushed by another individual while the rider is in a standing position. A maxi scooter is a scooter that has a carrying capacity of 250 cc or more while a knee scooter is used for patients with leg injuries. A mobility scooter is used mainly by older citizens who are more prone to immobility. A water scooter is used for water sports while a motor scooter is similar to a motorbike.

Mopeds are motorcycles with peddles. There are some sort of a hybrid between a bicycle and a motorcycle. They are unique in that they can be driven by an engine or can be cycled.

Their engines are less powerful in comparison to other classes of motorcycles. As for appearances it looks more like a bicycle than a motorcycle. Mopeds can have two to four wheels. There are economical in terms of fuel consumption and very popular due to their diversity, can be used either as motorcycle or a bicycle.
